Somewhere in Normandy, the kind of sky which Claude Lorrain and Nicolas Poussin would have peopled with gods.

FIFPro have released their statement in response to Fifa setting up what looks like a rival organisation which they can claim represents players. It is as meek and feeble as could be feared.

Fifa showing FIFPro the finger by creating yet another of those pretend forums filled with "legends", bypassing the trade union which represents 65,000 professional players worldwide. FIFPro could bring the house of Gianni down if it put its mind to it. It won't.

It is taken from one my most treasured books, "Derniers Combats", by Didier Pazery, who, in the early 1990s, tracked down the few dozen French survivors of the Great War, let them tell their stories, recreating poses of photographs taken while at the front.

As every Remembrance Sunday, a thought for my grandfather, lieutenant Henri Auclair, a Verdun veteran who fought in the trenches throughout all of WWI, died in 1999, aged 103, and taught us about the insanity of war and the necessity to embrace the European ideal.

This looks fascinating. Patrick Modiano and musician Christian Mazzalai have chronicled the history of a single address in Montparnasse, 70bis Rue des Petits Champs, home to Stevenson, Camille Claudel, Henry Ossawa-Tanner, Picasso, Claude Cahun, Ezra Pound and many others over nearly a century.

Watching Zielinski's astonishing goal for Inter v. Verona (a jaw-dropper and then some), I couldn't help noticing the virtual advertisement for UK-banned, illegal online bookie 1XBet on the *British* feed of the game. Absolute scandal. TNT should be fined, but won't be.

Now listening to Jean Cras's 'Danza Tenera" ("tender, loving"), which he wrote while serving - heroically - at sea in 1917. I'd gladly give all of Bruckner for this one ravishing piece. He was also a mathematician, an inventor and ended as the commander of the harbour of Brest, his home town.

I was chatting with @reporterlars.bsky.social about a true childhood hero, and wondering how many people outside of France (and Sweden) have any idea of who and how good, how brilliant Roger Magnusson ("Manu" for us) was. "The Swedish Garrincha", as Lars reminds me!

UEFA will decide which cities host the finals of its men's and women's 2028 and 2029 cup finals in September 2026. In the meantime, here are those which have declared an interest.

A few thoughts and quite a few numbers (in French) for Eurosport about the "decomplexification" of Premier League football, with long throws, long passes and headed goals making a spectacular (well, that's one way of describing it) comeback.

Great football stands of the world: I'm not sure that this one, 'la tribune du Parc de Marville' (originally built for a hippodrome in 1910) is that well-known outside Seine St Denis. Red Star FC is now the primary user of those facilities (but still plays its home games at Stade Bauer).

RIP Anthony Jackson, Mr Electric Contrabass, one of the men who put the groove in the records of the O'Jays, Steely Dan and many lucky others.

Quite the line-up for the forthcoming America Business Forum in Miami. Trump, Milei, Gianni Infantino (of course)...but Messi, Nadal, Will Smith as well, really?

A criminal complaint for offering illegal gambling services has been filed by the Swiss regulator, GESPA, against Fifa's NFT platform Fifa Collect.
