Spent a solid chunk of yesterday with my hands in the soil, and I lovedddd it! 3/4 10’x10’ beds done, one 1/2 done, and two 4’x10’ to go.

Neat! Sort of reminds me of yellow birch, which we have in the Adirondacks. We’d meet the standards of a “rainforest” if all of our precipitation was rain, alas we have very snowy winters. This YB is 95’ tall and north of 350 years old. Adirondack old growth is my favorite!

Our parcel boundary is pretty obvious—the surrounding timberland has been logged to hell for over a century. Our hemlock grove (~30 acres) shows signs of only *very* minor timber harvests. My guess is a pre 1900 softwood harvest, but not much beyond that. Our hardwoods need help… I have a plan!

I saw them from a distance in my Adirondack pond yesterday :) a first for me!

Ringed-neck, Hooded merganser, and Bufflehead ducks coexisting beautifully in our small Adirondack pond :)

Proud to stand with 1,000+ NoCo protesters! We should all be able to agree: ICE kidnapping a third grader is unacceptable. Reunite this family with the community they’re a valuable part of. Demand their return. Demand due process from ICE and accept judicial results.

Look closely… an incomplete picture of a 1,000+ person protest against ICE abuse. Kidnapping kids from a home they entered without a warrant turns out to be pretty unpopular. This community is fighting to return these CHILDREN home!!

I need three new friends for a challenge! Add me, pretty please!

Let's be friends in Pokémon GO! My Trainer Code is 023942996931!

ICE abuse of power in my area. Sick. Heading to the protest in a few hours.

17 ducks on the pond (a record)—a mixture of buffleheads, hooded mergansers, wood ducks, and mallards. As I stood there in awe… a Sandhill crane call echoed across the pond—a dinosaur-like call. I obviously teared up 🥲 #adirondacks

Cut, limbed, and bucked this tree the old fashioned way! We even pulled the logs out with a team of draft horses. Forestry school is great… I should’ve followed my heart and done this years ago. Better late than never, eh?

Walk along the St. Lawrence River! Beautiful, yet the overwhelming French fry smell from a Canadian starch plant really put a damper on it. I’ll take a quiet Adirondack lake surrounded by fragrant balsam trees over this, any day.

It’s a folklore, long pond edition type of day. ✌🏽 #taylorswift

My favorite lichen, Lobaria pulmonaria (lungwort), in a relatively young forest. Something I don’t see often—its reproductive range is thought to be relatively small. More often than not it’s in a forest with minimal historic disturbances.

St. Regis from Paul Smiths College in the Adirondacks ❤️ sleet and freezing rain this morning—elm, red, and silver maple buds have broken, and maybe aspen (I’d need to look closer).

First paddle of the year! Locked down three new bird sightings this morning, too.

Raven, immature bald eagle, and a pair of otters :) seen en route to forestry class in the Adirondacks! The snow pack is gone in some places, but under tree cover and on northern slopes you’ll still find at least a foot of compacted snow.

60 degrees in the Adirondacks! Skiing Slushface (Whiteface) was VERY challenging! My legs are jello, but it was a blast! And yes, I wear a helmet, hence the helmet hair. 🤓

First birding data collection of the year! From my back deck on the Grasse River, in the St. Lawrence Valley 🤓 I didn’t know an Eastern Meadowlark is actually a blackbird!

Signed first edition copy of one of my favorite books! Anne was a wilderness badass, and a huge inspiration for me to live off grid in the Adirondacks. The APA application for my new home is officially submitted… now the suspense! Anne was also an APA Commissioner.

Whiteface ski conditions were excellent today! And boy, the Adirondacks… wow! What a spectacular example of what WE can achieve, together! Constitutionally protected wilderness! The environment is worth fighting for… maybe you need a reminder, I did. #resist

I got sucked into an instagram ad for cool glasses… 😂 a month later…this! I didn’t order sunglasses, and these frames are well suited for Teddy Roosevelt, but not me. Oh well! 😂 Shame on me for caving to consumerism!
