In a blatant act of political coercion, US lawmakers are now threatening the UN Human Rights Council with sanctions—simply for considering an international investigative mechanism on #Israel. Such mechanisms have been used before, including for #Syria and #Myanmar. This is not diplomacy.

Some departures to The Hague are delayed.
Some are rerouted.
Some never leave the gate.
Some do arrive.

#Hungary has now cancelled the flight — announcing withdrawal from the #ICC as Netanyahu, under arrest warrant, lands in Budapest.

Rifaat al-Assad is not only the Butcher of #Hama, responsible for the massacre of tens of thousands of Syrians in '82.
He is also the Kleptocrat of #Syria.
He stole public funds to build a $1B+ property empire in Europe. Now his assets are being seized. But justice is still far off.

🤔 Did you know?
There have been already more than 50 convictions for atrocity crimes committed in #Syria in various European countries, notably in Germany.
This is due in particular to the principle of #UniversalJurisdiction.

Very important #UniversalJurisdiction trial coming up in 2025 in #France, as Roger Lumbala, a former minister and rebel leader, will be the highest accused ever brought to trial on the basis of universal jurisdiction for massive crimes committed in the Democratic Republic of the Congo #DRC.

The second book, I confess I've just finished it, so it's actually off of my reading list, but it's one of the best reads of the year. It's "The Wall and the Gate" by Michael Sfard. An amazing dive into the risks and challenges of litigating before #Israeli courts a wide range of violations of...

I'd like to add two books to my 2025 reading list below.
The first was suggested by Professor @abclapham.bsky.social and is called "Why War?", by Richard Overy. The table of content has me already salivating.

And of course, @stevecrawshaw.bsky.social, "Prosecuting the Powerful: War Crimes and the Battle for Justice" (out in Feb 2025), which I feel make for a fascinating read for both experts and the wider public.

Also planning to wander into the realm of #sanctions with

Now a novel, that has been on my reading list for months now. It is "The Memory Seeker", by @niezen.bsky.social. The ICC, Timbuktu & Nazis all seem to be there for a great read.

Also a memoir, that of M. Cherif Bassiouni, the lion of international criminal law. It is called "A Man of Many Flags", is pretty short and should yield fascinating insights into his eventful life.

In French, I have on my pile *Crimes contre l'humanité*, a memoir by Aurélia Devos, former head of France's war crimes unit.

Ken Roth, former head of @hrw.org, will be out soon with "Righting wrongs", which should be a fascinating read, covering as the subtitle lays out his "Three Decades on the Front Lines Battling Abusive Governments"
