Mateo met goats on our road trip this month. He really didn’t care at all until 1 showed interest in him. It quickly realized he had no food & ignored him. But by then he was hooked 😍

If you’re into rollicking action pop fiction, I listened to this on my 🚗🛣️ this month. They worked lots of NP’s into 1 plot! Apparently there’s a 2nd one already in the “National Parks thriller” so I’ll save it for next trip.

With all the US-government-induced strife, I returned to a book that resonated with me some years ago- Kate Harris’ Lands of Lost Borders. Travelogue heavy with history & introspection.
This quote about borders hits me still.
We subconsciously accept them as part of the landscape- at least those of us privileged by them, granted meaningful passports- because they articulate our deepest, least exalted desires, for prestige and permanence, order and security, always at the cost of someone or something else. Borders reinforce the idea of the alien, the Other, stories separate and distinct from ourselves. But would such fictions continue to stand if most of us didn't agree with them, or at least quietly benefit from the inequalities they bolster? The barbed wire begins here, inside us, cutting us through our very core.

It’s been a heavy squirrel surveillance week. Mateo will resume the hard work tomorrow 😊
We have one poorly coordinated one that has fallen off branches & the fence right in front of him 3x. Luckily Mateo’s good about being called off.
