A note on SaneWashing: I read part of this post to family (all liberal Democrats who consume a lot of news, but not social media), and it blew their mind. They all thought it was parody: if Corporate Media did not SaneWash, it would shock US, his approval would plummet from low (30s) to lower(20s).

in a reasonable world the Trump admin would be catching enormous amounts of shit for their decision to deploy the national guard now that this has happened, rather than the media helping manufacture consent for them ending all refugee programs

Personnel is policy. There's a reason most civil servants sit for some sort of exam. Yes, examination and credentialing cause delays in hiring. But civil servants serve in a position of public trust and you want to make sure they are qualified. Otherwise you end up in *waves wildly at DHS*.

i try to imagine sometimes telling a politician back in the 40s-90s that they can carry a tv studio capable of reaching millions of people in their pockets and they can use it for free and then they choose *not to*.
