seeing a lot of talk about how the mario movies "mischaracterize" the characters and I've never really been bothered by that. i understand where people are coming from but i think deviations like that help to create a new universe distinct from the games, which is a direction i'm really into

yknow i didn't think about this until now, but movie Bowser being a perfect mix of goofy and childishly evil while movie Jr. is more serious (from what we've seen) would make for a pretty funny subversion of their father-son dynamic. It's the SON that has to learn to loosen up a little

mario world's art comes from people that were masters of pushing the hardware *on the NES* but felt the repercussions of nintendo dipping out of the arcade scene so quickly (where the competition was perfectly comfortable with 16-bit by the late 80s)
Super Mario World has an extremely eclectic art style whereby many enemies are drawn in completely different ways. Development files reveal Mario went through many stylistic changes; it is possible that all the enemies were made to fit Mario, but at different points in time.

so I think the idea is that Mario/Luigi and Peach/Toad are splitting up and going their own ways for this adventure. hoping that having a more established A/B plot helps not make it feel as bloated as the first

TBH Bowser Jr. sounded a little off at first but after giving the trailer a few watchbacks I started to click with it a little more. I think it's mainly because I've always internalized him being like, age 7 when this makes him sound closer to 17

for how memed on the mario movie casting choices were, they honestly did their roles fine in retrospect. Fred Armisen is really the only miss IMO, and that's mainly because his Cranky wasn't nearly as crotchety as he should have been. but like, everyone else was fine

one thing i'll always appreciate the mario movies for is their willingness to pull from anything from the series' history. I wouldn't call chef toad from super nintendo world a "deep cut" per se but he's still an appreciated addition

and that's both midterms down. happy to finally be done, the past week was ROUGH
first of two midterms done! second one is tomorrow so i'm not done yet but this was definitely the one i was more nervous about and I did well
