In 2001 I wrote this ‘Laudatio’ for David Demson for a special issue of the Toronto Journal of Theology marking his retirement. The TJT have kindly made this open access. Those mourning David’s passing and remembering his life and work might find something in it.

I’ve used these with students over the years in relation to theology and the Enlightenment. They are are three very rich with detail and insights. The Gillespie takes a long run at it from mediaeval nominalise, but the last three chapters are directly on the period.

More nerdy Basel tourism after work today :: this time to seek out the house at Pilgerstrasse no. 25 where Karl Barth lived from 1946-1955 just west of the University and nearby the Basel Mission.

Some nerdy Basel tourism :: The house in which Friedrich Nietzsche and Franz Overbeck shared an apartment for seven years from 1869 during his time as Professor of Philology here at the University. The historic plaque in the second photo is on a fountain nearby.

Rich and instructive opening session of a three-day symposium on ‘catholicity and eschatology’ hosted by the Australian Catholic University at their campus in Rome. Expecting to learn a tonne. Will have to try say something intelligent about Karl Barth on the theme when the time comes too.
