RIP the unstoppable force that was Eddie Palmieri. An academy of music, a combustion engine. Take five minutes out of your human experience to sit with this performance, and consider how many elements are in thrilling convergence.

I've been working on a proposal for a pop aural skills/ear training book with my NYU colleague Samantha Bassler, and we're about to send it off to the reviewers. I want to talk it through a little on here because I'm nervous about how it will go over, and because we still don't have a title.

A tricky thing about modern society is that no one has any idea when they don’t die.

Like, the number of lives saved by controlling air pollution in America is probably over 200,000 per year, but the number of people who think their life was saved by controlling air pollution is zero.

Equity Arc, which trains young musicians of color, was set to play with the US Marine Band — until Trump's anti-DEI order canceled the show.

But Chicago stepped up, and now the students will perform at @chicagosymphony.bsky.social on 4/6. Grab a free ticket and join me in cheering them on. cso.org

This is the best of what I learned in school bands, that everyone belongs. That we all play our part.

These musicians and educators, these students, semper fidelis.
Retired service band members united to play in concert with young musicians after their show was canceled due to President Trump’s executive order ending DEI programs. https://cbsn.ws/4iaHcKm

When the history of this time is memorialized, our progeny will write about civil servants the way our forebears wrote about Paul Revere.

About 100 works listed here so far and note that I didn't list the humongous catalogue of Soon Hee Newbold! Y'all should already know about her anyway, right? 😄

President Carter was America’s most musical president. Musicians got him elected as Governor & later upped his image during his 1st presidential campaign. Wendell Whalum & the immortal Morehouse Glee Club. Robert Shaw & the ASO & Chorus. Willie (when weed was illegal), Cecil Wilson. Carter got it.

Black musicians, composers, music scholars predated the Renaissance and, not surprisingly, existed outside of the Western world. Let’s stop pretending composition, musicology, and music theory only existed in Europe.

While musing about how exclusion of Blacks is built into music academia as a colonial driven knowledge system, I (as usual) posted those thoughts to a twitter thread It was obviously not my first. …
