Was very fortunate to see Counting Crows play last night… only 27 years since I last saw them play in Scotland.

New preprint (NOT PEER-REVIEWED)

Community screening for #TB can reduce incidence. But we don’t know how best to target.

Targeting based on neighbourhood ARTI from convenience samples can substantially improve health and cost-effectiveness vs untargeted screening.

⚡️New publication⚡️

We investigated the risk and determinants of mortality in people notified with Invasive Group A Streptococcal disease in Scotland between Jan 2017 and Dec 2024.

⚡️New publication⚡️

WHO clinical staging is not sufficiently accurate to identify advanced #HIV.

CD4 testing remains essential to reduce morbidity and mortality.

Are there more people with #TB in cities or rural areas?

In a 🚨new🚨 preprint (NOT PEER REVIEWED) we modelled urban-rural TB trends from 2000-2023 in 26 countries with 4.6 billion people.

About half of people with #TB are asymptomatic (aTB). Calls have been made to stratify treatment and estimate incidence based on aTB case definitions

In this preprint we raise concerns that symptoms are an inadequate & inconsistent classifier of TB state, being highly influenced by context

Really great plot. And as per other comments, would have fewer groups for the categorical.

In the context of meta-analysis of aggregate data, we had a lot of fun figuring out how to include age as a predictor in this paper www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...

In meta analysis of data from nearly half a million people, we found that men have higher M. #tuberculosis immunoreactivity risk than women.

Likely to be key driver of
sex differences in global tuberculosis morbidity & mortality

🎉New preprint led by Greta Wood🚨

Among ~2000 adults with #TB in 🇿🇦 #multimorbidity was extremely common (86%) and strongly predictive of death at 15 months

Need for screening and management. 🧪🛟🦠

In the SaDAPT trial with people with #HIV and #tuberculosis symptoms in 🇲🇼🇱🇸, we investigated if antiretroviral therapy should be initiated immediately, or delayed until TB results available. ssrn.com/abstract=523...

Outcomes (incl. IRIS) similar across both arms.

Eliminating men’s excess risks for #TB & improving access to treatment to comparable rates to women could have major gains for men, women & children.

New publication, led by @rachaelburke.bsky.social

In meta-analysis of ~100,000 hospital admission, we found that AIDS-related illnesses (42%) & especially #TB (19%) remain the commonest cause of hospitalisation for people with #HIV, despite high ART coverage.

Over the last week was privileged to bring together in Blantyre leading #TB scientists & programme managers from Malawi, Zambia, South Africa & UK to kick off new research.

But utterly shocked to see the callous and heartless damage being done to patients & communities.

🚨New preprint (not yet peer-reviewed)🚨

Identifying advanced #HIV disease supports life-saving treatments. But access to CD4 testing is now really challenging.

Unfortunately, clinical staging is not accurate to identify AHD: we need more investment in CD4 testing!
