People know you can make smart moves in 2D chess, too, right? Doing something strategic doesn't always imply access to whole other planes of existence.

A national project list that doesn't do anything (yet) and a pipeline that doesn't exist. It's amazing how much debate nothing can stir up. #ableg #cdnpoli thenarwhal.ca/alberta-pipe...

Carney’s major projects push has angered many in Alberta over perceived lack of support for a pipeline project that doesn’t exist

Is there a piece of fiction that describes our current moment as well as something like 1984 and Dr. Strangelove did for theirs?

Huh. Cold November rain.

Interesting seeing conservatives arguing for restoring faith in capitalism by giving workers ownership of the means of production and access to the surplus value of their labour.

I knew about the federal notwithstanding clause. I didn't know we also had one in our provincial bill of rights and human rights act.

If the reasoning federally was to get provinces to sign on to the constitution, what was the reasoning provincially?

A whole lot of people make it their mission in life to read everything in the least charitable way possible, and to make sure you know it.

My friends are getting elected to public office and I’m sharing songs I like on campus radio. Pretty much equal, right?

I was pretty uninspired going into the election but I’m settling into a quiet optimism? We have the most new councillors we’ve had in over a century, heading basically straight into budgeting. Seems like as good a time as any to reach out and make your voice heard, before positions get entrenched.

90% of this article is calling Carney arrogant, thin skinned, short tempered, dismissive, and maybe borderline manipulative. One paragraph says he put in a dress code and wants people to be punctual. “Demanding boss” is by far the most flattering framing a headline could give.

His elbows-up enthusiasm won him the election. Now he’s governing like a Bay Street exec.

I’m trying to internalize the idea that you can be a goofball who does silly dances and also sing in four languages, quote 13th century poetry and drop life lessons in deceptively deep but also sometimes just plain silly songs.

But “The wine is for tasting, not discussing,” so I’ll be quiet.

Jonathan Richman is joy and sincerity and wisdom and silliness, an absolute blessing to see him perform. It’s a wonder how he makes every song sound so alive, and forces the audience to be so present.

I’m a little surprised how rusty I could feel after just three weeks off? Still a great mix of music, though. Despite everything, people are putting out great tunes these days.

Heading into my 21st movie of TIFF. 22 if you count the MOVI movie I watched on the flight over.

Outside a festival context this would be a cry for help. Inside it means I am just lagging behind the actual cinephiles.

I’ve reached the “wait, do I even like movies?” phase of TIFF.
