i totally see your point and i agree with you that i think it's a really important position to have a word for, as it describes a core part of what non-cis people experience in navigating the cisnormative world. even still, there are several main reasons why i wish we'd create a new term that's meant to be all-inclusive rather than change the definition of AFAB/AMAB #1 is what i've mentioned in other comments, that "assignment of sex" is a very specific phenomenon that happens only to intersex people and i think we really need to have a dedicated term to describe this as it is one of the most overlooked violations of human rights still regularly performed today. when we continue to muddle terms over time, it can lead to confusion in what was a once clear-cut definition. especially as intersex people are one of the most silenced demographics with the least amount of support, we need to be able to have terms that communicate very concisely what we, specifically, experience #2 is we also need to consider that this term was made for intersex people many years ago and trans people only began using it in the mid 2010s. when this is done without the consent of the original party, who has continually expressed how invalidating this has been and has made numerous attempts to reclaim the terms, why are they not considered whatsoever? why is it at the discretion of only the second party? does this seem fair to you? #3, and a rather big one, is that the intersex community does not have nearly the same amount of resources. i do want to be very clear that i don't bring this up to play oppression olympics, and the trans community has seen one of the most virulent, disgusting, concentrated attacks by the right that we have seen in modern history. but we also need to consider that the intersex community does not have the same visibility, while we also reap all of the same consequences from these attacks. tangibly, every single centralised intersex organisation that has ever gained any traction in the united states has shut down due to a lack of funding. people do not care enough to support us. the medical community does not do anything to research our health outcomes, when most of the medical problems we face are as a result of their meddling and mutilation of our bodies. "assignment" was a term used among the intersex community to specifically describe this cornerstone of our experience. imagine that too, being taken from you, and when you talk to a medical professional or a member of the LGBTQ+ community, people who should be on your side, people have no idea what you're talking about because the terms have been co-opted by another party and the definitions changed. this is our reality. and we do not have the resources to battle this level of misinformation when no one else is onboard, which leads to even less people knowing intersex people are even a thing, and less intersex people knowing how to recognise the intersex experience and realise that THEY are intersex. it's a brutal cycle, and is made worse when people won't even leave our terms alone so we can describe what is happening to us. words matter, and our terminology is necessary to communicate what happens to us i'm all for new terms being created, but we have a right to ours that i frankly think no one should be trying to take from us

i totally see what you're getting at here and i hear you. i think where i stand is that i object to AFAB/AMAB specifically being used to describe the overlapping experience that both intersex and trans people experience in terms of what the cisnormative system attempts to reduce us to. i do absolutely think that we should have terms for this because it's extremely important that we can talk about the gender divergent experience and how social/medical/legal systems marginalise the trans community based on the difference in what their sex and ""corresponding/causal"" gender ""should be"" under a cisnormative model. my thing is we come up with new terms all the time in queer studies/the queer community/sociological scholarship, so i think the thing i wish we could have is to come up with new terms to describe these phenomena rather than continually change and (in my opinion) muddy the original definition of "assignment" as i feel it describes a very crucial and specific part of the intersex experience that needs to be highlighted as a core issue of what our community has faced throughout history and continues to face to this day tldr i agree with the necessity of a term to describe the divergence of gender from what cisnormative society tells us it has to be at birth due to an incorrect causal sex-to-gender belief system that can apply for both intersex and trans people, but i just think it shouldn't be AFAB/AMAB since these terms already mean a very specific thing for a very specific, extremely vulnerable population

Terminology Sex assignment refers to the identification of an infant's sex at birth, typically based on observable physical characteristics. This is also known as gender assignment. In clinical and medical contexts, terms such as "birth-assigned sex" or "birth-assigned gender" are used to describe the sex identified at birth, or sex assigned at birth, or SAAB, while "assigned sex" and "assigned gender" may also refer to any subsequent reassignments, especially common among intersex individuals.
