in 1928 "jelly shower" meant something vastly different than it does today.

I couldn't easily find the entire backstory as to how this epic game of gays versus police softball came about but local columnist Doug Grow wrote a column about it a couple weeks prior (7/11/1979 Mpls Star). I like the one cop saying "What are we supposed to do, pretend [gay men] don't exist?"
Title of a newspaper column by Doug Grow called Faith, hope...but no charity. Doug Grow writing about how the charity softball game between the gay men and the police in Minneapolis in 1979 came about. The gist of it is that a member of a local gay bar's softball team called the MPD's softball team and proposed a game. There was some joking around but they agreed. The article then describes efforts by the gay team to donate proceeds to the Twin Cities Diabetes Association, which initially agreed but then later backtracked and denied it. The head of the MPD softball team said he got a lot of crap about playing the gay men and hte more crap he got the more he wanted them to play. "What are we supposed to do, pretend they [gay men] don't exist?" he said.

continuation of a july 31 1979 article about gay men playing Minneapolis police in a game of softball. The game raised $850 for the Muscular Dystrophy Assocation. The gay team had male cheerleaders which shocked the police. The crowd overflowed the bleachers. afterwards 4 off-duty police team members went to the y'all come back salon to join the gay team for a beer. the last section of the gays versus police softball game article. The police talk about why they lost. The catcher said they were too keyed up and there was a lot of peer pressure from fellow police. A gay player said they were all nervous, and wanted the police and everyone else to see that they were just normal people who enjoy softball. He said nothing could have happened better than today.
