Sure, bad guys lose too. But the main theme is that no good guys win--which is a hard inversion for fantasy. As for the quality, I tend to agree. "Everyone's a villian" is a fun concept for a deconstruction, but it also gets swiftly tedious. Which I suspect is why he's never bothered to finish.

I think the theme is better expressed in the novels, in that Martin's work is as much a deconstruction of fantasy tropes as anything else. The point isn't that Danerys is a bad guy, it's that basically every character is a bad guy--and any character who isn't winds up dead or ruined.
