I cut, burned, and tied way too damn many ribbons for a garland to decorate my daughter's "disco Halloween" birthday party.

Author w/ last name P: "I Swear" by Rep. Katie Porter. Candid, eye-opening, excellent uses of profanity. Damning of the political machine. By the (wealthy) people, for the (wealthy) people.

Fav line: "Being a real person and having a real life is in fundamental conflict with American politics."

Book rec by someone famous: "Beware The Woman" by Megan Abbott. DEEPLY unsettling. It's like "Get Out" for pregnant women. Couldn't put it down. The third act almost did me in. Rec'd by a podcast (either NPR or Vibe Check but either way that's famous enough for me!) @itsallaboutde.bsky.social

Debut book: "True True" by Don P. Hooper. YA lit paints a vivid picture of NY and a young man trying to reconcile his identities and right the wrongs in his world. Loved the callouts to "The Art Of War" and believed the relationships represented.

Book about a place I want to visit: "Fatherland: A Memoir of War, Conscience, & Family Secrets" by Burkhard Bilger. Germany & Alsace-Lorraine are on my travel bucket list. Author researches his complicated family history, focused on his grandfather who was a Nazi on paper. More generational trauma!

Author w/ different religion: "Soul Boom: Why We Need a Spiritual Revolution" by Rainn Wilson. References all religions, specifically the Bahai faith. I was left a little meh by this. Seems to target folks who identify as 'spiritual but not religious' but it wasn't very revelatory for me.

Read for 30 mins uninterrupted: "Prey" by Michael Crichton. Bioengineering gone wrong in the desert with tiny predatory drones. Science fluff. Finished this 6 hour audiobook in about 3 takes. Had a lot of Crichton recommended to me, this was the second completion. Gonna just skip to JP 😂

Historical novel: "The Postcard" by Anne Berest. The author fictionalizes reality throughout, from researching her ancestors who died in death camps, to her quest alongside her mother to understand how it affects them as non-religious Jews still living in Europe. Generational trauma & thoughtful.

LGBTQ Author: "A Star Is Bored" by Byron Lane. Based on the author's time as Carrie Fisher's PA & every fictionalized situation, conversation, & story from the "star" was completely believable. Grief, regret, finding identity, codependency, & lots of humor. #rootrootread
