Card 3: The High Priestess

Behold the Cassia's Owlet! Adorned with bright colors and an even bolder crown, the she retreats into her opaque chrysalis only to emerge as the large and winged adult.

I love how even the most miniscule of wasps still have the "must meticulously groom the antennae" programming. Little orange encyrtid demonstrates:

Going to try to post more with the influx of activity due to the public launch- wish I had recent live invert observations to share (I do have a backlog of specimens to process and ID), winter here is sad. But at least I've got birds- here are some Snorbs (snow bunting orbs) 🪶

Ga'ga karisu, Saipan Reed-Warbler (Acrocephalus hiwae) is a critically endangered species found in the Northern Mariana Islands. Though few remain due to habitat loss, they fill the air with their rich melodic songs in those places where they can still hold on. 🎨🪶🐡🌎

Relationships - Courtship

Despite their reputation, scorpions have a soft side people don't hear enough about.

They engage in complex mating rituals that involve vibrating while holding hands. Sometimes they even lock each other's mouthparts, essentially kissing. 🎨 🐡

Hello, been a while! I haven't had time to post much, with college starting up again. Here's a red-shouldered hawk spotted during a birding walk as part of my work for a local interpretation centre. Need to brush up on my raptor ID, wasn't sure if juv. red-tail or red-shoulder when first seen. 🪶🌿

BUG ALERT: Someone put together a huge photographic list of commonly observed moth eggs for visual identification and it's glorious. 🧪
Commonly Observed Moth Eggs
The eggs of many moth species look alike, and it's difficult to ID eggs just based on morphological similarity. Eggs may also change shape & color as the embryo develops inside, so a freshly l...

🪶Red-whiskered bulbul (Pycnonotus jocosus).
Watercolour on paper-backed silk, 114 × 165 mm.

Another bird which seared itself into my childhood memories in Chiang Mai. We in the North know it as นกปิ๊ดจะลิว ('Pitjaliu bird') after its call, though its Thai name is นกปรอดหัวโขน. 1/3

An American copper butterfly I found dead in some goldenrod, in perfect condition. I wonder what happened? Usually when I find dead insects in these plants a goldenrod crab spider is the culprit but there was none that I could see this time. Took it to pin, hopefully didn't steal anyone's lunch. 🌿

Happy World Krill Day!

These tiny crustaceans are the base of many food chains.

(And they’re not too bad. Very salty, with a disconcertingly crunchy texture.)

My day was made today by finding this rare gorgeous lad spooding around in some leaf litter and oak shoots. He's habronattus alachua - I've only seen 4 adults (female in the 4th pic, from earlier this year), and I love them. Sweet little fancy lumps. Enjoy. 🥹 🌿🕷️🧪
