A long time ago, I bought an expensive handheld. Worked great until I added a leatherlook protectioncase. On VHF, the performance went worse.

My hand/body acts as counterpoise. The same as operating the handheld transceiver.

You can add a resistor and capacitor as filter but rtty decoding works also without that RC filter.
