I was at mass for All Saints' Day at Meath Street in Dublin. The priest's homily mentioned the various saints depicted in artwork throughout the church, but didn't mention Saint Kevin Barry, who was hanged on 1 November 1920 and whose bust was carved by a church sculptor with republican sympathies!

An empty seat is reserved every night at the castle for an unexpected guest. According to tradition, Lord Howth's grandson was taken hostage by Grace O'Malley when she was denied entry to the castle around 1575. He was released on the condition that any unexpected guest would be welcomed.

I was delighted to have been given a fascinating tour of the twelfth-century Howth Castle, home of the St. Lawrence family from Daniel Eglington-Carey, in association with Dublin Decoded Tours

3/ My favourite piece was this wine cooler, made from Irish bog oak, that was presented to Morpeth from his constituents after he lost his West Riding of Yorkshire seat in the 1841 general election.

2/ There were many art pieces associated with my friend Morpeth, such as this bust and a portrait of him, then the 7th earl of Carlisle, at the Viceral Lodge in the Pheonix Park when he served a lord lieutenant of Ireland between 1855 and 1858 and again from 1859 to 1864.
