Doctoral Thesis Defense Synthetic and computational biology tools to study malaria parasites Pablo Cárdenas R. Wednesday, July 10th, 2024 3:00 PM – 4:00 PM EDT In-person: 66-110 Join Zoom Meeting: https://mit.zoom.us/j/98559985546 We have created systems that control gene expression in the malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum using bacterial repressor proteins. These are the first tools to reliably control malaria parasite transcription and offer the most robust method of conditional gene expression in these parasites to date. In addition, we have developed a computational modeling framework to simulate the epidemiology and evolution of pathogens such as malaria parasites in order to understand how drug and vaccine resistance arises in the first place. We hope all these tools advance efforts to engineer malaria parasites to control these pathogens as well as other infectious diseases in the future.
