Markets are a powerful tool that we can’t afford to ignore. For example, food banks use a market to share donations:

Yet the food that is distributed through food banks often originates with donors - large manufacturers or distributors - far from those needy clients. How that food is distributed to food banks across the country is the subject of this essay. An informal description is given of an innovation introduced in 2005 by Feeding America (at the time the organization was called America’s Second Harvest) that would better allow food bank preferences to be reflected in their allo- cations. Specifically, Feeding America transitioned from the centralized allo- cation process, where they would make decisions based on their perception of food bank need, to one where local affiliates would bid for food items. To do so, Feeding America constructed a specialized constructed currency called “shares” that are used to bid on loads of donated food. The process by which this change came about, its necessary idiosyncrasies, and its outcomes are described.

This morning there are inverted #POTUS flags hanging from highway overpasses across northern #Virginia.

For months there have been 🇺🇦 flying in some of these locations. They were torn down a few weeks ago. There are many more inverted POTUS flags.

The core of the system is a robotic recycling plant developed by Colorado startup AMP Sortation.

Their AMP One system uses computer vision to identify different kinds of waste. Pile of junk goes in, bales of sorted recyclables comes out.

My 7 year old saw me running updates on the command line, wanted to know more. So we installed cowsay and played around a bit.

10 min: he broke cowsay with unicode inputs.

20 min: my laptop has a "sussay" command that runs cowsay with an AmongUs.

Interesting! They used AI to convert a lecture series (lecture notes, PowerPoints, recorded videos) into a textbook.

Their goal is to make the lecture content more asynchronous so they spend class time on interactive discussion.

Seems like a credible effort to me.
“Because the course is a survey of literature and culture, there’s an arc to what I want students to understand,” said Stahuljak, a professor of comparative literature and of European languages and transcultural studies. “Normally, I would spend lectures contextualizing the material and using visuals to demonstrate the content. But now all of that is in the textbook we generated, and I can actually work with students to read the primary sources and walk them through what it means to analyze and think critically.”
