(strikethrough) This is the real “hear me out” controversial opinion (end strikethrough). I do not care about other people’s media tastes. That is not my business to control. If you don’t vibe with me, don’t force yourself to, and neither will I force myself to vibe with someone I don’t. What got me thinking is how we allow ourselves the freedom to create “problematic” (in all its spectrums) content for pure (strikethrough) horny (end strikethrough) entertainment or vent art to cope with grim realities, but censor ourselves from expressing our hopes for what could be. That is to say, what’s stopping us from creating Hetalia content that caters to more progressive ideals and not those that are weirdly conservative at best, or straight up fascist at worst? I don’t think that fandom = activism at the end of the day, either. This is more of how we talk about states, institutions, peoples, and ultimately, communities — because I feel that’s what makes this dumb comic series about gijinka landmasses so vulnerable to the occasional insensitive depiction of sensitive events/topics. Even how we talk about history is so hinged on the state that it’s easy to forget the different perspectives we can build upon — and it doesn’t have to take a final, “singular and homogenized” form either. It can be told as a collective of histories (and this is my preference already, but I obsess over how the bearers of these different narratives interact with one another and the mess spawns the dirt children we know and love). I don’t think it’ll guarantee a full stop to the sus takes, but we might get less of it if we cut ourselves some slack on whose point of view we want to bring to the table. Hashtag: I might have cheekily implied how a HWS (one-state) Palestine (solution) can work.
