The power of the gameboy's 160x144px resolution. Very different vibe from modern pixel games that show as much on screen as possible.
One of the greatest video game surprises of my childhood was finally seeing a full map of Saffron City and realizing that it was only this big, instead of the size of a massive real-life city like I'd originally assumed.
