I travel the world creating fine art, teaching painting workshops, and judging painting competitions.
Born in 1858 in Lowell, Massachusetts, Metcalf studied at the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and the Académie Julian in Paris. He went on to teach at Cooper Union and the Art Students League of New York.

Notice as well that Metcalf does not worry about completely covering the canvas beneath, as you can see in the detail. The paint is often thinly applied. If the color and value are correct, the thickness of the paint doesn't matter.

I've included a closeup detail, where you can clearly see the broken dashes of color that come together, imbuing every inch of the painting with a movement and vibration.

I have always considered Metcalf one of the greatest landscape painters. The most obvious reason is his ability to capture such a realistic sense of light and atmosphere. This painting is a great example of that, but look further at the way he applies the paint.

If you cover it while viewing the painting, the push of the cavalry loses some of its momentum. The cavalry would also have charged in a straight line, but Remington is once again willing to sacrifice reality for story.

There is an interesting compositional choice in this piece that I find fascinating. At first glance, the cow skull seems unnecessary, but it is very important, as it completes the arrow shape that the cavalry creates. This complete shape contributes to a more powerful sense of movement in the piece.

Only the eyes of the horses are visible to us as viewers, giving us a glimpse into their emotions at this moment, while the soldiers are simply background. This is not at all glamorous, but a truly terrifying moment.

As always, Remington puts story at the forefront with this piece. The charge of the cavalry may seem courageous and exciting, but I would argue that the primary focal point is the foreground horse exhibiting pure fear.

We will work from both cut flowers and photography in the studio. My class is highly tailored for each individual artist, so beginners as well as advanced painters are welcome. I demonstrate in oils, but acrylic and pastel artists are welcome.

Learn about choosing a subject, composition, values, color temperature, simplification, how to start and when to stop.

Each day will begin with a short lecture and full demonstration, followed by one-on-one instruction.

The painted floral requires a balance of spontaneity and accuracy, a perfect subject to practice adding energy to all of your paintings. I will demonstrate the process of simplifying the subject and moving to finish as rapidly as possible in order to add more excitement to your paintings.

PLEASE NOTE: Two of my six 2026 workshops are already sold out, and a third is almost full, so if you want to paint with me next year, be sure to secure a spot soon in one of the three classes that are still left.

While the paintings are impressive in reproduction, nothing but first person viewings can capture the dramatic scale of the work. These are large, rich in color and energetic paintings. The textural quality of the images is particularly striking, and I have included two details to illustrate.

Kimberly and I were able to view the show this past weekend, and it did not disappoint. While I have experienced a few of Saville's works in person, I had not seen such an extensive collection of her work previously.
