Two highly significant studies on dyslexia published recently:

doi.org/10.1111/jcpp...

doi.org/10.1002/dys....

Worth a look for any teacher or educator with an interest in the area.

Meant to post this earlier....

Another good 'starter' book on cognitive science, applied to education, for those who want an introduction.

A superb recommendation!

I'm a big fan of his work on literacy, specifically, also.

'The Reading Mind' is brilliant.

We also need to give due attention to the prevailing conditions in classrooms.

Circumstances now are markedly different from the time the 1999 curriculum was introduced🔽

What do we need to bear in mind as we move forward with a new Primary School Curriculum?

In a new article for the Irish Teachers' Journal, @paulalehane.bsky.social and I highlight key points from two research reports we published last year.

Congratulations to Dr Claire Dunne and colleagues on the launch of their new book in TCD this evening. 👏👏

An important contribution to our understanding of the last century of Irish education.

From a report @paulalehane.bsky.social and I wrote for NCCA:

"Evidence based practice involves the intersection of three components: (i) strong research evidence; (ii) teacher wisdom and skills and (iii) school and community culture (Hornby & Greaves, 2022)"

Dublin Central has proven to be a fairly nail-biting new constituency home.

Compelling viewing right right through to the final count.

With a sigh of relief at the end😮‍💨

Brilliant to see an update to David Little and Déirdre Kirwan's guidelines:

📘Language and Languages in the Primary School

There is no better toolkit for teachers looking to introduce #plurilingual practice in their school.

Milos might still be too raw 🥲

I have two tubes full of prints that I just need to frame and hang. I’ll get round to it some time in 2032.

We have similar taste Emma (!) The print from The Heart and the Bottle has relocated from my office to my sitting room. Humpty is in the bedroom- for now 😂

After an excellent 2024 conference, the LAI executive committee will soon start planning for our 50th year celebrations. I’m thrilled to be taking on the role of President during this milestone.

Q: What will literacy look like in another 50 years?!

In an excellent session on phonemic awareness, we learned about the work Irish researchers are conducting on this important topic.

Q: How can we make sure that Irish teachers can bring international research to bear on the unique linguistic context in Ireland?
November 16, 2024 at 1:00 PM
In our symposium on post-primary literacy there was lots of discussion on the lack of professional learning for literacy at second level.

Q: Are we any further on now than we were ten years ago? How can we best support disciplinary literacy at this level?
November 16, 2024 at 1:00 PM
One week on from the Literacy Association of Ireland annual conference and lots to reflect on.

The keynote, Dr Sonia Cabell, made a strong case for integrated literacy teaching.

Q: What supports will be available for Irish teachers as time is reduced and this integration becomes more important?

Tuesday 19 November will see the launch of the new DCU Centre for Literacy Research, Policy and Practice.

Join us for a discussion on the research we have and the research we need, peering across the life span.
