After an excellent 2024 conference, the LAI executive committee will soon start planning for our 50th year celebrations. I’m thrilled to be taking on the role of President during this milestone.

In an excellent session on phonemic awareness, we learned about the work Irish researchers are conducting on this important topic.

Q: How can we make sure that Irish teachers can bring international research to bear on the unique linguistic context in Ireland?

In our symposium on post-primary literacy there was lots of discussion on the lack of professional learning for literacy at second level.

Q: Are we any further on now than we were ten years ago? How can we best support disciplinary literacy at this level?

One week on from the Literacy Association of Ireland annual conference and lots to reflect on.

The keynote, Dr Sonia Cabell, made a strong case for integrated literacy teaching.

Q: What supports will be available for Irish teachers as time is reduced and this integration becomes more important?
