Data Scientist, former theatre kid, devoted caretaker to Turing the ShihTzu.
My grandson is terrible at arguing or a lyrical genius.

Me: Stop pinching your sister.

Him: I didn’t!
Me: Yes you did. I saw-

Him: I’M NOT A MERMAID!

Me: What does that have to do wi-

Him: Spider truck! Monster Dinosaur! ROBOT ARMM!

So, is he a conservative politician or Beck?

I’ve had this happen several times in my career. Asked for a quick rough estimate, give estimate and reiterate roughness. Find it marketing material a week later. NOOOO!!!

Conversely, I can spend months on analysis, validate, have colleagues kick the tires and it gets ignored.
Now I've come across several instances of people writing, essentially:

'Let me provide a very rough estimate. Don't take this number literally, because it has several flaws.'

And then their number becomes cited as the canonical figure on the topic.

The thing that keeps getting me about all the pieces fretting about Bluesky being too insular is that the argument seems to be that those of us who are most likely to be abused by the right (BIPOC people, trans people, queer people, etc) must put up with being abused for the sake of public discourse

My feed is dogs in outfits, scientific discoveries, data/statistics nerds and the arts glued together with left leaning politics.

I’m not going to feel bad about wanting to talk about quantum computing without fucking fascists showing up and yelling nonsense.
One thing I find interesting about the echo chamber complaint is that an echo chamber just won a presidential election.

Put aside the convo of whether it’s “good” or “bad” for a moment. The far right has devoted enormous resources + time to building echo chambers & loathes spaces they don’t control
The "bluesky is an echo chamber" think pieces that keep popping up really tickle me because they show how certain people genuinely believe social media should be for debating and arguing and not talking about the things that make you happy and sharing art with the world.

ok one more "how we do it on bluesky" re: "block, don't engage." it's not that anybody wants to tell you what to do -- it's that we collectively realized that this is what works. it works really great! zero, zero response needed. just block! don't argue at all with dickheads! try it! you'll see.

Me (rubbing my progesterone into my arm): Skeeting is what we do from the windows to walls, right?

Him: Twitter was tweeting Bluesky is skeeting?

Me: Oh, that’s cute …wait, do the youths know about the windows to walls?

Him: Probably, but they definitely don’t want grandma to explain it.

I don’t know what to say or do. So for the time being I’m just going to post pics of my Shih Tzu.
