technically, there is also the option of putting firefox into its own cgroup and limiting its max size, but I havent really looked into it tbh (dont really know how to do that)

you can coax firefox into being a little more assertive with memory management by ticking browser.tabs.unloadOnLowMemory and reducing the time to do that. sometimes, manually triggering gc also helps a little! both of these options kinda suck but alas, such is the life of a tab hoarder 😔

ah mb, didn't see that the other reply made it through, pls ignore this!

github.com/akatrevorjay... this project seems to automate it a fair bit! you still need to create a custom modeline, but once you do that it spits out a custom edid! the only issue that it has is that it doesn't support weird aspect ratios

ultimately you're right though, we really need a better tool on Linux 😔

and issuing ' echo 1 > /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/{dridevice}/trigger_hotplug' will cause the graphics card to detect the new edid and send the new resolution to the monitor

while the answer only explains how to make a semipermanet change, it is possible to create custom on the fly by overriding the edid on that is presented by on the monitor. issuing 'cat correct-edid.bin > /sys/kernel/debug/dri/0/{dridevice}/edid_override will overwrite the edid

if you're referring to the ability to create custom resolutions, then good (eh) news! there is apparently a less shitty way to create them. it is still somewhat convoluted but I tried it and it seems to work reliably, even on wayland. this askubuntu answer goes in more detail: askubuntu.com/a/973582
Wayland how to set a custom resolution

2/2 as it reacts quite angrily when i cover the speaker, increasing the harmonics and reducing the power output

1/2 something that i've also noticed is that the dsp profile is similar the one present in macbook pro speakers as it uses the harmonics trick to improve its bass performance and also seems to perform realtime analysis of the voicecoil temperature

i need to get back into advent of code
