Time for another stuff I wrote thread. My wife pointed out to me that some of my novels are fairly dialogue intensive. I said I like writing dialogue. She said you should try writing screenplays. I thought about that for a while, because I knew nothing about screenwriting. Then I took a workshop.

He cannot blame your father, so he blames you.” “That’s the part I don’t understand. How can Father compel this group of men into these flies to come and take me from my home and all the way to Kenya? No military man can do something like that especially in the middle of a war.” Dembe laughed a little. “Your father isn’t exactly a military man. He runs his army in his own way. He pays all of us very well to be here. We’re a private army, with your father as the supreme commander. I choose to consider him my king until my people find a king again.” “Private. You mean mercenaries.” It was the first time that I had ever considered what my father did. A flood of truths came rushing. The family homestead wasn’t purchased from the proceeds of my mother’s half-assed attempts at producing wine. Nor was it subsidized by my father’s conscription into an army that operates near the theatre of war but not quite in it. He reporting to no country in specific, much less the country of the homestead. Father’s letters never matched the news of the war from the Horn that Jeremy spoke of, except in the roughest of terms. How could I not have noticed that Father was a mercenary until a fly covered conversation in the middle of nowhere with a man I’d met only weeks before? Lions should have roared to punctuate the moment but they were smart enough to avoid the flies. “Mercenary is such a negative term. We’re freedom fighters,” Dembe said. “Someone is paying you to fight for freedom, a freedom that isn’t going to accrue to you or your people?” Dembe nodded in response to my question. “Then you’re mercenaries.”

This is my third widely available novel Crutch. It was published in 2024, but written a fair bit earlier. 2020 kinda interrupted my flow.
