First designer to get 2 games on the list! We did a series, year before last, of (almost) One Shot Wednesdays, and this was a discussion highlight. Teaches a lot I think about setting vs mechanics and what players bring to the table. Super unique game ✨

I mean... does this one need an explanation not answered by the title? Besides. You literally create characters using descriptive words and then use your words to solve problems 🤯🤯🤯

My personal Everest, the only rpg I own I havent finished reading. It starts off with one of the best metaphors for depression and dysphoria Ive ever read. Its full of incredible ideas I gravitate towards innately, that fucking sing to my soul. Its structured to actively harm my adhd 🤦♀️🤷♀️

Feels early Miyazaki in the best way. Whimsical, beautiful, dangerous. The system is elegant, the art is stunning, the writing is endlessly creative. Usable, inspiring, delightfully awful. And the magic is *chefs kiss*

A Pound of Flesh is maybe my favorite adventure Ive ran. Im probably a pain in the ass talking about it so incessantly over the years, but it really does deserve it. My favorite types of horror, perfectly designed for the way I use and reference adventures. Violently anti capitalist

Does so much with so little space. A few lines and a black and white and suddenly people come alive. Feels real, lived in, true. Mythic rather than magical in the best way.

That sweet sweet classic resistance system. Gorgeous, cool as hell, incredibly evocative writing. Spawned a million kickstarter spends and inspired me to design my first real game. Plus, feels kinda great to fuck up some fascists, even if youre likely go down with the ship.

Its no big deal, take a little corruption. Get stronger! And sure, youll become a bigger target, but just take a little more corruption and... That self destructive snowball that feels so good until it blows up your life. 1e made me genuinely love mechanics for the first time.

Inspirational sports game rpg!!! Even character creation is fun. Its heartfelt without ever feeling saccharine, light rules that have a large impact. Gorgeous. Fantastic graphic design and layout legitimately makes it all more usable. Play it. Itll make your life brighter ✨

Such a good setting. Going to call out Blood Cotillion as one of my favorite one shots, period. You play assassins pretending to be debutantes at a ball while hunting for cultists. Amazing settup, hilarious character options. Genuinely laugh out loud funny playbooks, which is rare 💖

Deserves so much more attention. You play medieval witches balancing your secrets and social desires with the supernatural beings causing your village problems. Moves are from. plants youve collected. Each plant has 3 spells. Use em, find new ones, cycle through as you go. Genius 🙌

My favorite 5e product(s) ever made. Gorgeous art, full of poetry and thoughtful touches. Clever rules, cool adventures, awful monsters and genuinely heroic settups. Posting the starter adventure in particular cause its 🔥 and theres not enough duet games in the world.

Played a 13 session campaign with the beta before they released campaign rules. Hell of a group, amazing game. Theres a long thread from twitter might be worth reposting at some point. I figured out I was trans unrelated mid game, which is some timing. Extremely memorable. Bleed is real 😱🩸

Helped me fall in love with the OSR. Literary, brutal, bizarre and surprising by turns. I had the joy of playing in the playtest for the rerelease, starting one of my favorite groups of all time. Stayed together for several years. Sam, Yoshi, Ethan, Sean, youre the best 🖤

Generative dungeon crawl through an endless library. Emily Allen does brilliant, thoughtful work consistently and this is a classic. Gorgeous reprint the second with stunning art by Alec Sorenson. My first ennie judges pick once upon a time, and I stand by it.

Canvas scroll maps! Memories, cultural practices, emotional trauma, and age are your resource management game. It feels good. Structured enough to keep a GMless game flowing, deep enough to find your feels, beautiful, engaging. Gotta play it in person.

One of the few games deserving the hype. Shockingly readable, new player friendly, gorgeous art, tactically crunchy and fresh feeling while remixing entirely things youve seen before. Its real good. Ran a short campaign of it with some great people and had a blast

Still one of my favorite rpgs. The way it simplifies resources and scarcity is incredibly elegant, the balance as players fuck with the world theyre simultaneously exploring and bringing to life. Introduced Avery Alder and map making games to me. Absolute classic

Last night I finished a 3 session run of Beyond the Pale by Yochai Gal, a decidedly Jewish Cairn adventure centered on the shtetl of Kest. Theres a ton of interesting things worth talking about in this one, and it will be spoiler heavy by necessity. Lets dive in!
