We had a lovely #JMU Sed/Strat field trip yesterday, exploring Devonian strata in West Virginia that tell the story of the Acadian Orogeny.

We survived hail and bitter cold winds in the AM, giving way to sunshine, paleosols, and fluvial channels in the afternoon.

Recently I've been refreshing myself on #soil micromorphology.

Here is the suggested thin section sampling scheme from Fitzpatrick (1993). Eleven thin sections for one (1) soil profile.

lol sure my man, I'll just get one of those 50-yr mortgages to pay for that. 🧪⚒️🪨

Happy #SoupSeason to those who celebrate!

My mouth started watering when I was writing the alt text.

Stacking up some coastal plain paleosols (fossil soils) for #FossilFriday. They're relatively immature and heavily overprinted with tectonic cleavage. Poor little guys.

Took my Sed/Strat class out to WV48 (Corridor H) for a lovely fall field trip Sunday. We had a blast examining the incredible paleo-Vertisols of the upper Devonian Hampshire Fm.

Pedogenic slickensides in 3D, root traces, plant fragments, and lots of burrows (lung fish?)!

I love #paleosols.

A very #spooky northern black widow spider, chillin' under a boulder of Devonian Oriskany Sandstone near Berkeley Springs, WV. Gotta watch those hands when looking for brachiopod fossils!

Spotted during a family outing last weekend; highly recommend.

Bouma sequences, hot off the rock saw!

Upper Ordovician Martinsburg Fm. (Page Valley, VA) showing Ta-Tb-Tc. Sweet climbing ripples in the Tc.

Middle Devonian Millboro Fm. (Brandywine, WV) with Tb-Tc and silly, convolute bedding in the Tc and a nice weathering rind.

The Devonian Oriskany Fm. (quartz arenite with brachiopod molds) tightly folded, with the uppermost Devonian Helderberg Group (micritic/cherty limestone) in the armpit of the anticline.

The 2025 Google Earth imagery is wild. We live on such an astoundingly beautiful planet.

Namibia (-23.6551610, 15.2430470). Close-up and wider view. In wide view: a structural dome popping out to say hello. Note the different eolian sediment compositions to N and S of the stream channel.

What in the world is up with these wild, incised meanders? They have about about 75 m relief with the surrounding terrace.

Iran might have the coolest geology on the planet.

This one is gonna be a nail-biter, folks! Personally, I'm all in for the little green alien mineral.

Nate Silver's framing of #BlueSkyism is just a skill issue. It's quite a lovely place over here on my feed.

How about this example of the short-term carbon cycle... 👍

For #FossilFriday here is the 1986 FJ60 that I used to roll around in during grad school. I miss it dearly.

Good morning. While on a road trip this summer, I stumbled upon a "cool S" just north of the PA turnpike near Bedford.

Thank you to the Devonian Hamilton Group, Alleghenian deformation, and subsequent exhumation for constructing this homage to the 90s.

Another fun test: meander cutoffs and river-dominated delta progradation.

In-channel L-bars are visible in the stream channels and migrate down-slope.

X-secs of coarsening-upward prograding delta lobes are also discernible.

Found some cool baby snake skeletons while re-insulating the joist bays in my crawlspace this weekend. They are teeny-tiny.

(the crawlspace is fully encapsulated and actually quite nice, but little pill bugs and I guess tiny snakes get in somehow)

If they more or less maintain NSF's funding level, they can put the new FBI headquarters in my back yard, rent-free for 99 years. Caveat: they have about 1/6 of an acre to work with.
