Using 3D shape analysis of the enamel-dentine junction, we found that SK 835’s tooth was more similar to P. robustus specimens from another South African site, Drimolen, than to those from Swartkrans or Kromdraai.

Then, we were able to identify a single genetic variant in the protein, enamelin, that differentiated specimens.

Two specimens (SK830, SK850) carried one version of the protein, a third carried another (SK835), and a fourth specimen appeared to be heterozygous, carrying both (SK14132).

We were able to determine the biological sex of the specimens.

Two of the specimens were positively identified as belonging to male individuals.

The other two specimens were semi-quantitatively identified as belonging to females

We were allowed to sample 4 dental specimens from Swartkrans member 1, South Africa.

We had asked for teeth fragments that were not morphologically distinct or those that had been previously studied.

Even though there's a large number of fossils recovered from different sites in South Africa, there's still uncertainty around the high fossil variation observed in specimens being classed as P. robustus.

In this work, we attempt to answer some questions around variation in P. robustus.
