Lisbon in the 1940s: one hand on a coffee cup, the other clutching a forged transit visa.

At least, I would have been. Or maybe I'm becoming delusional in my editing-era.

Built a little tower of blue books today—old loves and new obsessions all lined up like a palette of moods.

There’s something about a blue spine that promises depth, quiet, and a story that lingers.

What blue-covered book should I add next to the stack?

Books shape the reader.
Stories shape the writer.
Research shapes the story.
And coffee holds us all together. ☕️

One thing I’ve learned:
The stories we’re afraid to tell are often the ones that resonate the loudest.

I read historical fiction to remind myself that memory has a longer lifespan than time.

I write historical fiction to remind everyone else, too.

If the book whispers “take me home” when you read its synopsis, that’s legally binding. You must in fact, take the book home.

I didn’t write today’s Substack.
My protagonist did.

I’ve embodied my Sophia Langford again, and wrote a love letter to Chiado in 1950 that I still can’t shake.

If you want to see the city through her eyes—through memory and longing and the echoes of a war…

🕯️ Her letter is waiting.

Just finished editing one of my favourite chapters in The Lisbon Circle and quietly sobbed while rereading my edits. In my defence, it wasn’t supposed to be emotional. The characters just decided otherwise and took over the creative control

I merely work here.

People think writing just happens—just meagrely typing words on a page.

But writing is thinking, feeling, remembering, and rewriting until the page finally stops arguing with you.

Lisbon isn’t just a city—it’s saudade.
She lingers like sunlight, hums like fado, and won’t let you go, even when you leave.✨

💛 In lieu of tomorrows goodbye to my city, a love letter to her is now live: open.substack.com/pub/wanderin...

✨ Strangers. Allies. Sisters. Ghosts.

The Lisbon Circle is fiction, but born from echoes—women imagined, yet rooted in whispers of truth.

A sneak-peek excerpt from my edits—full reflection on Instagram if you’d like to linger with it longer. 📚

Lisbon doesn’t just hand over her truths. She lets you fall for the light first. But the real stories are hidden in the cracks of her tiles. 💙

Some stories aren’t just fiction—they’re memory.

Hayley Gelfuso’s The Book of Lost Hours, out today, is a luminous debut: a library of memories, a fight against silence, a mirror we can’t look away from.

I shared a full reflection on my blog: wanderingpagesandplaces.substack.com/p/the-book-o...
The Book of Lost Hours and the Fragments of History We're Allowed to Keep
There is a certain kind of library I have always dreamed of: not one linked with fiction, or the imagined realms of dragons and questions, but a library of memories.

✨ so… I did a thing & finally jumped on the Substack train.

Think of it as my little literary café table—where history lingers in Lisbon’s stones, bookish musings wander freely, and words never run dry.

Two weeks. One book. Still reading.
The writing’s clunky, the plot’s flat, the characters… meh.

I could DNF. But I hate giving up—it feels unfair to the author.
At what point is enough, enough?

Are you a proud DNF’er or a stubborn page-turner?

I’m deep in edits for my debut novel, The Lisbon Circle—a story of sisterhood, survival, and the secrets Lisbon keeps.
It’s my love letter to forgotten women and the city that raised me.
Every chapter is a piece of my heart.

Some stories echo.
This one stayed.
#TheLiesTheyTold is haunting, human, and heartbreakingly true.
Lena’s voice is fiction, but her pain is not.
It clings. It lingers.
It dares us to remember what history tried to silence.
