I was living in Manhattan in the 70s and being an afficianado of good sportswriting, I was amazed that people would rave about Red Smith, who was writing for the NYT, since his columns were SO fucking boring--but then I got a chance to read his old stuff from the Brooklyn Eagle & Herald Tribune
