They were exceptionally lucky with the weather! Hurricane Gabrielle narrowly missed Bermuda while the group were at sea, while two further hurricanes (Humberto and Imelda) are imminently threatening the island. Conditions could not have been better while they were there.

The students went snorkelling to investigate different styles of carbonate production. North Rock is one of the northernmost coral reefs in the world. Bermuda was hit by a marine heatwave this summer but, although there was coral bleaching, it wasn't severe as Bermuda's corals are quite resilient.

They had several geology trips to investigate the island's geological history, which records glacial-interglacial climate and sea-level variability through a series of aeolianites, beach deposits, palaeosols made from wind-blown dust from the Sahara and speleothems.

They learnt how to filter, extract, and measure chlorophyll content from water samples, and also analysed zooplankton from a zooplankton tow that was performed on the R/V Atlantic Explorer. They also saw a Trichodesmium bloom (a type of bacterium that fixes nitrogen)!
October 3, 2025 at 8:18 AM
The students went on a 24 hour research cruise on the R/V Atlantic Explorer, joining one of their regular expeditions to Hydrostation S in the oligotrophic Sargasso Sea, the longest-running open ocean time-series in the world (running since the 1950s)
