Loud Ambient by The Black Dog coming in strong as my album of the year; based around artwork by Rothko, each track stands on its own - but listening to the whole fits as albums used to, at least for me. I don’t see it as ambient in the literal sense; it’s an interpretation with loads more energy.

13 patient months waiting for the Analogue 3D to start shipping; left Hong Kong on Thursday; arrived in Thailand today… but ooooh no!

It’s been 18 months running FreeBSD 14 as my daily OS. Very stable and fairly fast, my only gripe has been managing userland software; pkg binaries throw a few too many surprises, and sometimes disappear… but overall I’m very happy, stick it on your laptop! owlandrews.com/texts/freebs...

Currently have Obsidian via a Ubuntu chroot on FreeBSD, but it gives an annoying error on every save of a file (though it does often save). I wanted a native version, it’s already added to the ports repository, but excluded from the pkg build due to a EULA. It’s just failed building after 2 days…

FreeBSD 14.3 is now available for upgrade. Running a desktop system? Don’t forget to re-install your drm-kmod components from ports, they need to be compiled for the correct base version - as I have just found out.

Happy 30th birthday to the Sega Saturn, released in Japan on November 22nd; I spend an inordinate amount of time with this console and got my first one in 1998. Learning the system is never dull and often infuriating. Still have a ton of fun hacking on this hardware!

Pottering around Rawai, Phuket this weekend, stumbled upon the most chilled habitant of the island, and the bar is high!

It’s time to move house in a week, always an unsettling and stressful period; but definitely made worse by my collection of retro consoles - these cables were never supposed to be untangled…

It’s the end of some public holidays where I am and it’s been a perfect day to continue work on my Tiled to Sega Saturn map converter. Adding support for more than 256 colour images; this sucker can do 2048 in indexed palette mode!

Never trust SD cards from resellers. I bought what I thought was 128GB SanDisk, for use with an original PSP. First 32GB worked fine, and by coincidence this was all I needed it for initially. Adding anything further was unpredictable; suspected the 20 year old device first… then lost a week.

After a very long absence from attempting to run a *nix on desktop I installed FreeBSD 15 on a cheap(ish) Lenovo Carbon X1 Gen7. The experience has so far been unexpectedly good (helps to have researched the hardware). WiFi (not 100%), Suspend/Resume, audio (yes, audio!), trackpad, graphics all work

So far resprite has been easy and intuitive to work with, using it in my iPhone it’s just my thumbs that are the main problem. Made a blorb.

Gone with resprite.fengeon.com for now, although it’s newer and has less reviews that I can find, it’s targeting a closer UI to aseprite, supports the .aseprite format and ultimately; the only one that worked on both iPhone and iPad. I’m a complete amateur at pixel art so consistency valued most.
