I know this is a drum I bang a lot but this includes the fucking left. The fetishization of the postwar democratic settlement and the fixation on Thatcher as "when it all went wrong" is just as much an Imperial fantasy as the fucking Tories singing Land of Hope and Glory.

We will be stuck in a cycle of making things worse because the nation has a fetishistic obsession with Thatcher and Empire which cannot acknowledge the reality we now live in.

Individually, not all of us deserve this. But as a people? It's the consequences of our own actions coming home to roost.

Dafydd Elis-Thomas was a titan of the Welsh nationalist counter-cultural movement of the 60s and 70s. Like many young Welsh people of this period, his politics were of the radical left and viewed Welsh national self-determination through a Marxist lens. In 1979, he contributed the introduction for 'Socialism for the Welsh People, the formative document of the Welsh Socialist Republican Movement and a guiding piece of work today. From 1979 to 2025, Welsh Socialist Republicans have read and been inspired by his words. Elis-Thomas' writing in that pamphlet still holds as true today as five decades ago. Text reads: "The recognition by Marxists and others of the essential link between Socialism and the National Question is taken for granted in the Third World, and increasingly appreciated amongst the submerged, Stateless nationalities of Western Europe and North America. National movements are embracing Socialist ideology as the only way of ensuring control by the working people of each nation of its own resources. Here is the only effective way to end domination by foreign capital." Dafydd Elis-Thomas Foreword to Socialism For The Welsh people Text reads: FROM REVOLUTIONARY TO BRITISH PEER In his time Elis-Thomas was a visionary of Welsh socialist-republicanism, but his contribution to our cause does not end in his most radical period. On the 18th of September 1992, he was made a lifetime peer in the British House of Lords. Still a self-proclaimed Welsh nationalist, he willing joined the British state in it's administration of Wales. In 2004, Lord Elis-Thomas expelled Leanne Wood from the Senedd chamber for referring to the queen of England by her proper name - Ms Windsor. No Marxist nor Republican can take an honour from the monarchy they oppose to their core, lest they end up like this - defending the institutions they once opposed and the monarch they once were committed to tear down.

Last month, we warned that greater rainfall through climate change would create the dual crisis of flooding and slips.

Our politicians have wilfully ignored this growing crisis.

Our solidarity goes out to the people of Abertillery tonight in the wake of a coal tip spill.
