UK-based photographer, mostly specialising in the sky/space, here to share the beauty in all our skies!

Follow for pretty pictures, interesting facts about the skies & weather, and maybe the occasional silly conspiracy debunking along the way!
I sadly wasn't able to catch any of the funnel clouds people reported a couple of days ago, but yesterday I finally caught another thunderstorm - my 2nd this year!

It had a pretty impressive updraft structure as well, it almost looks like it was broadly rotating 👀

Brilliant noctilucent clouds on a late night drive! These uncommon, enigmatic clouds are only found fairly close to the poles around the summer solstice, and are (by far) the highest clouds in the sky!

They shine electric-blue as due to Earth's curvature, the Sun hasn't set up there!

Came across the best thing today in a random charity shop! His name is Willow, and he's an old boy who can't walk, but his owners regularly take him out to see the world :)

A timelapse of some pretty lenticular clouds I caught yesterday! These unusual clouds can sometimes look like flying saucers, and are easy to tell from other clouds by the fact they don't move with the wind!

They're formed by standing waves resulting from hills :)

They're quite far from me but some nice storms are going up! :)

Today's pretty storm! I sadly wasn't able to get to the larger cell before it fizzled, but as it faded a couple of smaller storms popped up nearby! This also gave me my first lightning of the year :)

I'm still waiting for my first thunderstorm this year! It's quite rare in my experience to not get one before May, but sadly it happens.

Tomorrow could have potential though? At least some models think so. GFS? Sure. ICON? Not so much. I hope GFS is right!

11 years ago today I caught this "whale's mouth" effect in the outflow region of a beefy incoming thunderstorm! I was only a teen then but I remember this storm very fondly as one of the first I really took the time to photograph. Good times!

In more exceptional displays such as this one from 2022 (which is also my pfp!), it can appear as a shimmering, beautifully bluish-white ring around the entire sky, at the same altitude as the Sun.

But given their rarity, I'm happy to have seen it at all. I haven't seen one for a year!

Can you see a faint shimmering white line in the clouds, just above the centre of the frame? This is a faint fragment of a parhelic circle! This elusive ice-halo is caused by refraction through ice crystals!

It's hard to distinguish from cloud, but timelapses can give it away as it remains fixed!

Storm potential on Thursday? The models seem divided atm (ICON-EU predicts no rain, GFS predicts a line). I hope we get something though, I haven't heard the sound of thunder since last September!

The Peak District always has such incredible views 😌
This was taken on a walk a couple of days ago, when the weather was almost like summer!

We have a bigger chomp! #eclipse #photography #astronomy

The eclipse has begun, and my totally-not-Frankensteinian setup of a good camera plus an old solar filter I used with my first telescope is capturing every moment!

First real storm of the year! Sadly I didn't get any of the thunder, but drove out a little to try and put myself in a kink in the storm line, it didn't give me anything too impressive but there was a bit of turbulent cloud :)

Apparently it caused flash floods though sadly

Didn't catch this lunar eclipse due to a combination of it being low in the sky & cloudy, so instead here's my first & best ever eclipse capture - the 'Super Blood Moon' eclipse of 2015!

It was a truly unforgettable night, and well worth being exhausted at school the next day 😅

Keep your eyes out if it's clear! Below are the UK times from timeanddate :)

The total eclipse might baaarely be visible from the UK, but it'll be tough. Even more so if there's cloud 😅

It's been a beautiful day of convective, stormy showers! Sadly no lightning (except apparently a brief bit in London) but some pretty anvils!

This kind of weather is always a fun part of early Spring, when cooler air combines with a warming Sun to produce small showers :)

It's not very often you see the entire UK covered in weather warnings at once! The amber is a maximum-impact one as well, meaning it could turn red if the forecast fully verifies :O

Stay safe everyone! This could be quite a day!

Chilly views in the Peak District! Good time for some wandering!

Had a wonderful view of the #thunderstorms over #Queensland last night from my hotel balcony!

Although a hundred miles away, the storm was throwing out clear bolts like this every few seconds!

You wouldn't get this back home in December 😅

10 years ago today, I was lucky enough to be in Sydney for a piece of weather history, as this beautiful thunderstorm opened the heavens for the 3rd wettest Christmas on record!

The rest of the day was sunny & hot, so I got the best of both worlds!

Sometimes, when the water droplets are consistent, the iridescence can take on a more orderly shape, forming rings around the Moon/Sun, as seen here. This is called a corona!

Yesterday I shared some pictures of the Sun, now it's the Moon's time to shine! Under this lighting, the iridescent clouds almost look like a nebula!

The power of the Sun, captured around a year ago!

Usually photos of it are taken either with a powerful filter that removes everything else, at sunset when it's at its faintest, or are glared out. But every now & then, a helpful layer of cloud lets us see its full power in a natural perspective!
