Hello Bluesky! I'm a photographer & science nerd mostly interested in the beautiful sky, so I called myself OverYourHead Photography!

The world is full of people irrationally getting mad at the sky & world in general, let's instead understand, appreciate & share in its beauty!
20 years ago to the day! A truly incredible example of how dangerous supercells & strong tornadoes can develop even here.

It's very lucky imo that this beast didn't kill anyone, few people impacted likely knew it was even a risk, let alone taking the precautions needed for an EF~3 beast!
A picture of the Birmingham tornado taken at this time 20 years ago. It lasted 20 minutes and caused £40 million worth of damage [£70.9 million in 2025] after it travelled 11 km and is rated at T5/T6 on the TORRO scale. This was just one of six tornadoes that formed on that day.

I sadly wasn't able to catch any of the funnel clouds people reported a couple of days ago, but yesterday I finally caught another thunderstorm - my 2nd this year!

It had a pretty impressive updraft structure as well, it almost looks like it was broadly rotating 👀

Incredible!
Stunning shelf cloud from the cell passing over Cheshire!

Brilliant noctilucent clouds on a late night drive! These uncommon, enigmatic clouds are only found fairly close to the poles around the summer solstice, and are (by far) the highest clouds in the sky!

They shine electric-blue as due to Earth's curvature, the Sun hasn't set up there!

Came across the best thing today in a random charity shop! His name is Willow, and he's an old boy who can't walk, but his owners regularly take him out to see the world :)

The summer of 1976 is repeatedly used by.. people.. to somehow discredit climate change or hot summer weather.

Here are the global temperatures from 1976 compared with 2024. In 76, the UK was a warm anomaly on a much cooler planet. Today? The entire planet is warmer.

Beefy storm day ahead down South, stay safe if you're in the path!

And if you're chasing, try to stay out of the hail cores 😂

Of course this happens while I have a broken ankle & can't drive 🙃 Ah well, maybe next time
FRI 13 JUN 25

‼️High risk areas: Sussex, Kent, Essex, Suffolk‼️

▸ Prolific lightning
▸ High rainfall rates (70-80mm p/h)
▸ Strong wind gusts (>60-70mph)
▸ Large hail 2.0-2.5CM in diameter

Keep your eyes out everyone! This storm could put on a good show tonight! (Same for us in the UK too!)
A geomagnetic storm is expected to set skies aglow in the northern part of the U.S. on Sunday night into early Monday morning, with the northern lights potentially visible as far south as Alabama to Northern California, according to the NOAA’s Space Weather Prediction Center.
Northern Lights May Be Visible as Far South as Alabama

A timelapse of some pretty lenticular clouds I caught yesterday! These unusual clouds can sometimes look like flying saucers, and are easy to tell from other clouds by the fact they don't move with the wind!

They're formed by standing waves resulting from hills :)

They're quite far from me but some nice storms are going up! :)

Exciting stuff, but currently too far South for me!

Anyone in the areas of interest should keep an eye out for some good storms!
Todays convergence line is now beginning to develop.

Why must the fun storms always be too far away 😔
North Somerset into south Wales will likely be the focus of thunderstorms tomorrow given modest shear and orographic lift overlapped by surface convergence.

Cold air aloft helping cloud tops reach 35-40 thousand feet in the more intense cells, large hail also a possibility.

Today's pretty storm! I sadly wasn't able to get to the larger cell before it fizzled, but as it faded a couple of smaller storms popped up nearby! This also gave me my first lightning of the year :)

Exciting! I hope I see a good show!
THU 01 MAY 25

Strong capping at the surface levels today presents a classic 'loaded gun' scenario.

Elevated thunderstorms are possible across Wales/Midlands/Lincs this evening & into the early hours.

One or two could potentially be on the more severe side.

11 years ago today I caught this "whale's mouth" effect in the outflow region of a beefy incoming thunderstorm! I was only a teen then but I remember this storm very fondly as one of the first I really took the time to photograph. Good times!

Can you see a faint shimmering white line in the clouds, just above the centre of the frame? This is a faint fragment of a parhelic circle! This elusive ice-halo is caused by refraction through ice crystals!

It's hard to distinguish from cloud, but timelapses can give it away as it remains fixed!

Storm potential on Thursday? The models seem divided atm (ICON-EU predicts no rain, GFS predicts a line). I hope we get something though, I haven't heard the sound of thunder since last September!

The Peak District always has such incredible views 😌
This was taken on a walk a couple of days ago, when the weather was almost like summer!

Stunning view of Venus so close to solar conjunction! It's a shame the crescent phase is so brief, only lasting a couple of months every couple of years, because it's so amazing to see the planet as a delicate crescent :)
Venus in daylight, taken this morning on a gorgeous sunny English day!

Seeing wasn't great so most of the videos I took were pretty poor. This was the best of the bunch.

I exposed it to try and capture the sky colour as it looked through the scope

The eclipse has begun, and my totally-not-Frankensteinian setup of a good camera plus an old solar filter I used with my first telescope is capturing every moment!
