A church tax is not the same as a state religion. And in most countries you can opt out of it. But it is still the government collecting money for the church.

It’s always strange or funny to me when Americans who are anti-religious point to Europe and say we should tax our churches. In many European counties the churches are state churches which means in part that they are funded by taxes. We’ve never done that in this country. It’s illegal.

That place is nuts. I bought a “make Uranus great again” hat. The weirdest part is when you walk in. All the staff stop what they are doing and yell at you in unison “welcome to Uranus!”

I suspect all this terminology is only of interest to the clergy it affects. I am fascinated with words and their etymologies, so I get excited about these things. As the church continues to decline, a whole wacky lexicon is being lost....
