So happy to find so much community within Bluesky. Also hi #medsky #nursesky

I'm not a frequent poster but I love to share a mix of personal fun like my outdoor adventures with my current focus on battling disinformation within the nursing profession.
The only highlight about this whole thing are the memes. 🤌

"We have fought and died alongside you....During your darkest hours...we were always there. Standing with you, grieving with you, the American people.” I’ve had my differences with Justin Trudeau, for sure, but he rose to the occasion here.

Since there's renewed discussion today re: how Republicans are defining sex, it seemed a good opportunity to repost this video I made for med students on the topic.

The tl;dr: It's way more complicated than Republicans want to admit.

I've been thinking about what to say to show my anger, disgust, and sadness for what has happened. In the end, this is best. Trans people are who they say they are. I will always be a safe nurse, I will always fight for their right to healthcare, to exist, to be who they are. 🏳️‍⚧️
Hey. Just a reminder...

Trans rights are human rights.

End of debate.

Congo DR “Disease X”- if you’ve been paying attention you logically may be a bit alarmed.
The fearmongering crowd is activated online, scary headlines…AND we still don’t know what it is. There are practical explanations, and it may turn out to be a non mysterious outbreak.

I hear we are supposed to share cat pictures on BSky. This is Mouse, we adopted her when she was 11 and now she's 14. She's not the brightest crayon in the box but she's cute.

A super handy, easy to understand guide when it comes to some common tactics used by those that spread disinformation. Also 'sealioning' and survivorship bias are common.

I posted this VIROLOGY piece on Threads and was asked to post it here. It’s my first BlueSky post and its long:

Let’s talk about virology, my area of research for 50 years. Specifically, let’s talk about H5N1, best known as bird flu. But first let's talk about receptors. 1/15

AI imagery is already prolific across the web. Always view images from new/unknown sources with healthy skepticism. Sometimes Chrome's reverse image search can be super handy and there are lots of amazing AI and tech researchers and analysis on BSKY to follow and learn from.
BOOOO NOOOO BLOCK BLOCK BLOCK!!! This image is fake. Let’s not let fake science accounts thrive on Bluesky!!!

Main takeaway: 7-days of abx should be the standard of care for patients with uncomplicated non-S. aureus BSI.

Today is World Pancreatic Cancer Day. In Canada, 7100 people will be diagnosed and 6100 will die from it (CMJA article via cancer.ca). The purple ribbon stems from Rose Schneider's love for her mother who died from this insidious killer. It is now the official colour.

The continued rise in vaccine disinformation is hurting our communities. Diseases many my age never even saw are now a real risk for our children.

As nurses often hold so much trust, lets make sure we are speaking out against the swell of disinfo and advocate with compassion and evidence.

Gentle reminder to always review accounts in block lists. Sometimes mistakes happen and accounts that shouldn't be on a list end up there. Worst case, a list owner does it intentionally to an account they just don't like. I use them as a guide and block individually. Only takes a few minutes more.
