Well, it's that time again. Meet "Cicada", BA.3.2* (including descendant RE.*). This one has been underground for years (its ancestor BA.3 hasn't been circulating since early 2022, and didn't do much then either). but is now emerging as a contender for the next major lineage.

Another Covid study indicating that vaccination-only immunity > "hybrid" immunity > infection immunity. It doesn't come as any surprise; infection isn't as immunogenic as vaccination. Don't seek Covid for updating antibodies. Vaccinate instead.

Antibody responses to SARS-CoV-2 variants LP.8.1, LF.7.1, NB.1.8.1, XFG, and BA.3.2 following KP.2 monovalent mRNA vaccination | mBio
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) continues to evolve, producing variants that escape vaccine-induced immunity. The current work shows that KP.2 monovalent vaccination provides limited protection against antigenically distant Omicron variants (LP.8.1, LF.7.1, NB.1.8.1, XFG and BA.3.2). These findings highlight the ongoing challenge of maintaining vaccine effectiveness against evolving SARS-CoV-2 variants and argue for continuous updating of vaccines.

Some concerning signals of a fresh wave of COVID in Germany, well after the earlier XFG.* peak.

Could be seasonal factors, but that momentum shift looks too sharp IMO.

The rise of BA.3.2.* is a possibility. Note the sequencing data lags by several weeks.

Scientists studied thousands of children born March 2020-May 2021.

Out of 800+ mothers diagnosed with COVID-19, 16.3% of their babies received a neurodevelopmental diagnosis by 3 years old, compared with 9.7% who weren’t exposed to COVID-19 in utero.

Fantastic analysis showing the persistence of excess COVID deaths. That there would be excess is obvious, as with COVID we have added another disease that kills people, but it's good to see this is confirmed empirically.
I’ve added an Excess Deaths Comparison page to my analysis on that topic. Here I’m comparing the UK, Sweden, Australia and New Zealand, to June 2025.

My method projects "Expected Deaths" using a linear regression on the weekly deaths (4-week average) from a baseline of 2015-2019 deaths.
