By contrast the Erivo version makes Jesus into a much more sympathetic figure. She conveys a kind of deep pain and suffering. It's beautiful yes, and of course Jesus is a tragic figure, but to me it weakens the criticism of the Christian story I always read in the original

And the movie Gethsemane kind of feels like a kid who is too afraid to stand up to his father's completely unreasonable demand that he die for some unknown reason, he expresses that he doesn't see the point but will do it anyway because daddy said so. You kind of pity him as much as anything

In the movie, Jesus comes off as kind of a whiny and dismissive leader of a cult he didn't mean to create mostly made up of uncritical followers. When Simon asks him to use his influence to fight Roman oppression, Jesus is just like, yeah that's dumb you should just die and go to heaven

I believe it! I think that's for the best, I dunno I think it's had a pretty weird and bad effect on how people listen to and think about and write music
