Posted to NSA's Policy On-line on 15 Dec 1998 Are FURBIES OK in NSA? Question: It has come to my attention that a new toy on the market contains an artificial intelligence chip. An office I recently visited had two of these toys in their spaces. Apparently, these stuffed critters learn from nearby speech patterns. It would seem to me that this might be a security issue in that they can pick up any spoken language and repeat it. My understand is that these toys contain a writeable chip. Isn't this a security concern? POLICY ONLINE ANSWER: This question refers to "Furbies," the latest "must-have" toy. We asked Security On-Line to provide us with an answer. Here it is: FURBIE ALERT Personally owned photographic, video, and audio recording equipment are prohibited items. This includes toys such as "Furbies," with built-in recorders that repeat the audio with synthesized sound to mimic the original audio signal. We are prohibited from introducting this items in NSA/CSS spaces. Those who have should contact their SSO for guidance.
