Ran away to Norfolk seaside. Alll musings of an opinionated dog lover who writes for @BylinesEast about politics, nature & fairness. Pro EU centrist.
Wonderful to see your @sheldricktrust.bsky.social army of orphan elephants at Spitalfields, London, as life-size sculptures.

Made my heart sing.

Why buy Hallowe'en webs when those that live with you make them for free??!!

So confused.... are we approaching Hallowe'en or Christmas...

Feargal Sharkey in the other place makes a great point...

"It is difficult, if not impossible to combine the citizens' rights and interests and the private enterprise's interests, because the private enterprise aims at its natural and justified objective, the biggest possible profit."

Crossing the estuary at Manningtree is something special.

Best station has to be Gunton.

It only has 1 workjng platform but as you wait, the opposite platform & station building, privately owned, is a throwback to the golden days of rail travel with flower beds & porters

UK researchers may not have access to these pan EU events either.

Such a lost opportunity to network with fellow scientists on European Researchers night.

More concerningly, the impact on much needed research in UK can not be beneficial

Not at all... grasses dies back naturally and then returns next year. Plus in dry weather long grass traps the morning dew... and with rain a scarcity it's needed.

My patch uncut for 2 years... and I hear & see insects in it.

Nature great at self management and less grass mowing too boot!!

Have supported our local milkman since pre Covid. Such a lifeline with their deliveries of milk, cheese, yoghurt, fruit and veg, bread etc etc during those lockdown months.

Less plastic with reusable bottles that don't need recycling & hopefully more money going direct to the dairy farmers

In my garden by north Norfolk coast very few butterflies... the buddleias, and I have 5, were devoid of any butterflies this year. Lavender bank too.

But yes the flowering mint is loved mainly by insects, but only a few gatekeepers and some very tiny moths

What is most shocking is the tiny amount of land devoted to horticulture - orchards & fruit and veg

These are foods critical to health when our society is riddled with obesity & malnutrition...

Thx @sambentley.bsky.social for this UK Land Use graphic

Crutches - I found that crutch pads helped, though the ones I bought were still too thin. You get what you pay for I guess.

In the end I used the pads together with my leather padded fingerless cycling gloves. That really helped relieve the pressure on the palms.

A butterfly bounce back? Really. Sadly not in my North Norfolk garden.

The many lavender and buddleia flowers are full of white tailed bumblebees but not a single butterfly on them - not even the 4 small whites or single speckled wood flying around

Having discovered the joy of insects via the writings of @vannabartlett.bsky.social am intrigued by how small and diverse they are.

This 👇 on my pond is new... what is it? Sort of looks like a water boatman but it's white and with wings I think.... about 1cm in length with longer paddle arms

This is ours.... hidden by incredible morello cherry harvest, and less incredible nettles and blackberry bush but loved by insects

Yes it's now a door to nowhere....
July 5, 2025 at 9:05 AM
Me too... the No Mow area is alive with insects too.

Even had a grasshopper chirping away... first time in years

Not been cut for over a year.
June 29, 2025 at 7:37 AM
Noticeable... uncut lawn is green and alive with flying insects.... prob as long grass holds the morning dew...

Cut... struggling to not turn brown..

Bonus - No Mow saves time & energy too.
June 28, 2025 at 12:17 PM
Joy.. in our no mow all year section of lawn, this being year 2, I can hear either crickets or grasshoppers.... first time.

Wonderful.

Oh and added benefit no mow really saves on the time cutting grass.

Ladies, it's not only water that we should carry in the car but one of these, designed for female anatomy...

Nip into back seat, expand bottle & no-one will know that you are relieved with an "oh thats better" moment.

Friends swear by them. Compact when concertinaed, so keep in glove compartment.

No Mow May long grass is full of insects - unlike short. Perfect food for the swifts that fly over most evenings.

As @vannabartlett.bsky.social writes 👇 "if you keep an area of longer grass throughout the summer months you will find all sorts of insects taking up residence"

It's true.

Nature's capability to survive is astonishing.

This thriving tree should be a lesson for us all - rather than chop down a tree, give it a bit of help and you'll be rewarded.

Well done to Kirkwall council who had the foresight to do this.

Our road verges need a Great British Spring Clean

Rather than mile upon mile of cones to protect litter pickers why not invest in a convoy of these trucks that, spread apart, can roll along the carriageway in line with & safeguarding litter pickers

It works in Europe

You may be an unofficial account @nationalhighways.bsky.social but can you do anything to clean up the A3 northbound litter debris.

All the way from Portsmouth to M25 it's more or less like this.

Simply shocking and tells world UK has no pride.
