Literally, South Korea's parliament officially recognised the "chorus of K-pop" and "waves of light" as part of defending the country's democracy.
3/ The NA recognised how "waves of light," accompanied by "the chorus of K-pop", united citizens across generations, gender and class. Letter calls it a "revolution of light" that transformed 2016's Candlelight Revolution into 2024's movement. www.theguardian.com/world/2024/d...

8/ So while the surface chaos revolves around martial law and constitutional appointments, and justifiably so, the other battle is a race against time.

Assuming Yoon's impeachment is confirmed, can Lee Jae-myung secure the presidency before his legal troubles catch up with him?

1/ A high-stakes political chess game is unfolding in South Korea, where seemingly chaotic moves around constitutional appointments are happening amidst a deeper battle over opposition Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung's presidential ambitions.
1/ South Korea is facing an unprecedented power crisis with Acting President Han Duck-soo facing impeachment vote today, just under 2 weeks after President Yoon Suk Yeol was impeached over his martial law declaration. bsky.app/profile/kory...

Today is Yoon Suk Yeol's 64th birthday. While presidential security rejected official summons, they've reportedly been accepting flower baskets from supporters since yesterday.

The impeached president remains in seclusion at his residence since Dec 12 address.

This is a remarkable political statement from IU. In fact, it's almost unprecedented - K-pop stars almost never make explicit political stances, given the industry's strict control over artists' public images and positions.
IU announces she’s providing food and hot packs for protestors, available to fans (Uaena) and nonfans alike.

This is exactly why I never really got worried, actually.
'The first martial law since the 1980 Gwangju massacre', rhetorically, is a very very powerful motivation to act.
And as we saw in 2016, Koreans aren't afraid to act to protect their hard-earned democracy.
The visceral reaction to the words “martial law” (계엄) grounded in shared memories of May 1980 is undoubtedly a key reason Korea survived December 2024 with no bloodshed. The reaction was swift. Now the Constitutional Court must ensure it’s decisive.
Quote from Minju party leader Park Chan-dae’s speech today, which referenced Han Kang’s Nobel Prize win:

“She asked, “Can the past help the present? Can the dead save the living?”

Experiencing the insurrection, I want to say “yes.” Because Gwangju 1980 protected us in December 2024.”

This sums up what I’ve been hearing as well. The South Korean public wants to hold Yoon accountable for his abuse of power but Lee Jae-myung, the most prominent opposition leader and likely to run in a snap election, is an incredibly polarizing figure. I hope the Democratic Party is taking note.
This is apparently (unconfirmed) a poll from a Korea University message board, with 6.7% opposing Yoon’s impeachment, with 14.1% supporting impeachment + Lee Jae-myung becoming president, and 79.2% wanting impeachment + Lee not becoming president

Did we all decide to translate “내란죄“ as “treason”?

I see that’s what the Korean press is doing—they are notoriously bad at translating Korean—and all the pundits are kind of going along with it.

I’m also more of a “vibe” translator than a academic one but not when it comes to legal terms.
