Chatbots — LLMs — do not know facts and are not designed to be able to accurately answer factual questions. They are designed to find and mimic patterns of words, probabilistically. When they’re “right” it’s because correct things are often written down, so those patterns are frequent. That’s all.

As a librarian and archivist (not for IMLS but just in general), please please please support your local libraries right now. All of them are underfunded and understaffed even without direct attacks from the government. They don’t want anyone to have access to any kind of information.

If Outlook would check if the answer to someone’s question was already in the email to which they are trying to reply, and not allow them to send it, I might forgive that the Outlook search function is essentially useless.
