#DYK seagrass is one of very few marine flowering plants that grows in UK waters? With green leafy shoots and tiny scale-like flowers, it produces seeds that germinate in sand, allowing the plant to thrive in the clean, clear water of shallow sandy bays and sheltered sounds 🌱🌊

Happy #WorldBaskingSharkDay to these gentle giants who, lucky for us, frequent Scottish waters every summer. Did you know they're the second largest fish in the world?!

They might look a little spooky or have some weird habits but these marine creatures are some of the most fascinating in Scotland’s seas. Any others you'd add to the list?

The new UK Nephrops FIP was launched to improve sustainability management in the scampi supply chain, but just six months in actions are already being signficantly delayed, targets are moving, and transparency is lacking.

Meanwhile, supermarkets continue to market scampi as “responsibly sourced”.

TimEagle MSP is right to challenge Defra's allocation of the Fishing and Coastal Growth Fund 🧵

Scotland’s marine habitats are of huge significance to the UK and Europe, as Scotland holds more than 60% of UK seas, and 13% of Europe’s marine area.

Today, after a decade of delays, the Scottish Government has finally introduced new limits on bottom-towed fishing with 5 sites at full protection and 14 other areas zoned - leaving large sections open to damage.

Real recovery of Scotland's seas now depends on effective monitoring and enforcement.

The Office for Environmental Protection (OEP) recently identified “possible serious failures” in how Defra is managing UK seas 🌊🧵

📊 7 out of 15 targets remain unmet.
⚠️ Another 6 are only “partially met” or “uncertain”.
🐟 Evidence shows reckless harm is continuing & protections are not working.

When scallop dredgers enter MPAs they’re not just damaging habitats, in this case, they’re extracting resources from communities that have worked hard to ensure the MPA is working.

This means local benefits are often lost & the protection status of the MPA is undermined.
