I see some book piracy discourse, and, to make a positive argument in favor of buying books, your marginal ability to influence what books get published and support the careers of writers you like is massive compared to most other forms of media.

Kurt Vonnegut’s definition of what makes something “art” is one of my favorites I’ve seen - from a letter to his brother in 1995.
People capable of loving some paintings or etchings or whatever can rarely do this without knowing something about the art-ist. Again, the situation is social rather than scientific. Any work of art is one halt of a conversation between two human beings, and it helps a lot to know who is talking at you. Does he or she have a reputation for seriousness, for sincerity? There are virtually no beloved or respected paintings made by persons of whom we know nothing. We can even surmise a lot about the lives of whoever did the paintings in the caves underneath Lascaux, France. So I dare to suggest that no picture can attract serious attention without a human being attached to it in the viewer's mind. If you are unwilling to attach your name to your pictures, and to say why you hope others might find them rewarding to look at, there goes the ballgame right there. Pictures are famous for their human-ness and not their picture-ness. There is also the matter of craftsmanship. Real picture lovers like to "play along," so to speak, to look closely at the surface to see how the illusion was created by nothing but an unusual human being, with hands and eyes. If you are unwilling to say how you made your pictures, there goes the ballgame a second time. Good luck, and love as always K

Japan is in no way perfect, it has many flaws, but this sort of thing is fucking phenomenal and I so desperately wish we had an approximate of it becuase fuck man it sucks that so much of our lives get dictated by corporate morality
yandere-angela i think it's important to acknowledge that the reason why mastercard/visa has such a stranglehold on american society is because cash is not the main form of payment in the usa. the predominance of card has effectively privatized currency in japan, one of the reasons why dlsite and other similar websites are able to just remove visa as a payment option instead of changing any of their merchandise (aside from the fact that visa doesn't have a monopoly here) is because cash payments for online transactions remain an option. even if you don't have a jcb credit card or paypay or whatever, you can still pay for your online purchases using cash by taking your barcode to a convenience store, and you can do this for essentially every online vendor, meaning credit card companies can't just impose their moral judgments on your purchases with much repercussion butch-snorlax How does that barcode system work? I've never heard of something like that. yandere-angela 1. you add whatever porn games or movies or books you want to your cart and go to checkout 2. you select cash payment at conbini as your payment method 3. youre emailed a barcode that you take to the conbini 4. you show it to the cashier, they scan it, and you pay what you owe. note that the cashier does not see what youre buying and the transaction is complete

Wasei-eigo A single panel comic where three stickmen are reading manga on a monitor, with the currently visible panel depicting a nude shot of a female character alongside a narration reading "Even her style is good..." This makes no sense as you obviously don't have a "style" when you're naked, and the reason for this is a mistranslation borne from assuming that the Japanese word スタイル (sutairu) is just the English word "style", when in fact its meaning in Japanese is actually "figure", as in "Even her figure is great" - the actually correct translation for the line in question, as it actually makes sense for a comment about a naked body. The first stickman understands all this and is going "Argh!" in response. The second stickman is unaware and is just saying "What?" The third stickman, slightly offscreen, is going off on a rant about how スタイル is CLEARLY the English word "style" because they've learned just the exact dangerous amount of Japanese where they think they know way more than they do, resulting in confident proclamations about things that are very wrong. There is text under the panel, which says "If you really hate someone, teach them to recognize wasei-eigo mistranslations." The comic is titled "Wasei-eigo", and it was created by Daiz (of daiz.moe) and modeled after the xkcd comic strip number 1015. The manga panel featured in the comic is from a series called Goodbye Isekai Tensei. #translation #localization
