Using super-resolution microscopy & proximity labeling, we show these clusters are dynamic, metal-responsive, and tightly regulated. PacL proteins not only stabilize efflux pumps, but also act as metallochaperones binding multiple metals.

These effluxosomes are organized by PacL proteins, which act as scaffolds clustering P-ATPase pumps like CtpC, CtpG & CtpV. The result? Coordinated resistance to multiple metals, including zinc and cadmium, used by the immune system to poison bacteria.
