We're going to get a "Mission Accomplished" banner before the mission is ever explained
Per @jenniferjjacobs.bsky.social, DOD presented Trump with plans for strikes in Venezuela yesterday, including on the ground. Astonishing to see the U.S. on the brink of another regime-change invasion with essentially none of the pre-2003 effort to rationalize it domestically and internationally.

The water view vs valleys setup in Seattle is quite old now. McGinn (left/The Stranger) vs Mallahan (mod/Seattle Times) had a pretty similar shape in 2009

i suppose yes to the extent that their preference is 'no new legislation'

In the 10s there were state leg.s that were controlled by breakaway mod Dems voting w/ Reps. The NY IDC caucus is the famous one, but WA had one, a few others IIRC. All filibuster less. Does the filibuster actually help the most moderate D and R senator have legislation reflect their prefs?
MattY writes a bit more about the thinking in his newsletter, where he says that the cavers caved to preserve the filibuster (which he thinks was bad). But I'm not actually sure the filibuster helps mods. In a filibuster less world, wouldn't they get to pass more mode legislation?

I didn't understand Indra's Net before I realized it's the same idea as the xkcd infinite grid of 1 ohm resistors. I still don't understand it, but I didn't before as well.

Had any legislature self abolished? Like, Charles I did not call parliament or sought to end them quickly. The current US house is just not meeting, it's not even clear Trump has asked them to.

Maybe the szlachta of Poland Lithuania?

Toronto consolidation was a provincial act to weaken city libs. The equivalent move in say St. Louis would be to add suburban voters until repa can win, but those voters hate St. Louis and so the state is simply taking control of police and forcing the city to pay a police budget w/out oversight

Toronto adaptation is an interesting contrast. Nothing stops a US state from consolidating a city like Toronto. Yet, generally RW US govs prefer to strip power from cities instead of adding more RW voters. I think the diff is that RW US voters hate cities and view not being in one as a privilege!

Across the developed world, big city conservative mayors and council majorities are quite common—except in the US. Why are Republicans are so much less relevant in cities than their peers in every other developed country? My latest:

Trump is about Trump to some extent, but there has to be some larger connective tissue between the rise of Trump and the rise of the far right in every developed country. LePen is about Le Pen, but there's something bigger as well. Even when Trump goes will see something similar.
