It’s hard to put the vibe of the last two weeks into words but basically it feels like my canary didn’t even survive the car ride to the mine

The only reason anti-vax attitudes were able to take root in the modern era is because vaccines are so fucking good at their job people forgot why we need them

I've told this story before on the bird site, but I'll share it here.

Ask local candidates for office if they have a library card. In a past job, none of them had library cards, and consequently, and unsurprisingly, kept trying to cut library funding.

Ask. Ask if they use the library at all.
I’m a public librarian in a degenerating democracy, and I am pleading: Care about your library. Use it. See what programs and events it offers. And pay attention to its governing body. See who the trustees are. Consider running yourself. Libraries will need all the community support they can get. 📚

this reminds me of those 12 people who were responsible for thousands of book ban requests and it's a good reminder there aren't actually that many malicious actors in the world, just lots of systems unprepared for exploitation

Hello all: It is with a heavy heart that I remove my Starter Pack of "Trustworthy Mesopotamian Copper Ingot Merchants Within the City-State of Ur."

I have been informed about some pretty unfortunate oversights on my part and ultimately platformed some creators who should not have been platformed.

Her core premise is that people should use data to make the decisions that are best for them individually. Which is: a) the antithesis of public health, and b) a recipe for increasing inequality, because it basically means that privileged people can do what they want at the expense of everyone else.
Oster writes that “With more information, we provide room for people to drink raw milk but also vaccinate their kids. Which is, basically, a reasonable choice.” Oster claims she is being far more nuanced, but I don’t think there’s enough nuance here. Raw milk is not “reasonable” for many people.

I've always assumed the average American bases their vote on vibes and emotions, but hard to stomach grown adults basically telling us "the vibes and emotions are controlling my body I don't even know what's happening"

“raw milk is a reasonable choice for some people” is a good example of being so open minded your brains start to leak out of your ears

"Accused of, and sometimes engaged in" is a fucking *incredible* phrase. You're a political analyst! Your entire job is distinguishing between things politicians are accused of and things they actually do.

Btw re: trans sports. If we offered a permanent ban on trans women in sports in exchange for no further attacks on trans rights in other areas, not a single GC activist ir conservative lawmaker would accept the deal.

Because it's not really about sports. And thats why it's pointless to concede.
