Verso is constantly in a negative light, he lies and betrays the team multiple times for his own goals. Every time he is treated like an asshole for it. He uses people for his own end and the game never treats him as a good person. Maelle for 99% of the game is heroic fighting to save the world.

We literally had an entire boss fight against Renoir over the fact he was in the wrong. It never once made it a point to portray is methods as good AT ALL. Its insane you think that.

99% of the game is Renoir being treated as the bad guy. The game never stated ONCE that his methods were right. He was trying to fix his family and was doing horrible things well doing so. Verso is yelled at for his betrayal of the team.

What are you talking about? Verso (Liar), Maelle (Self-destructive), Renoir (Destructive in general), and the Painteress (Neglectful parent) are all portrayed negatively. They are all doing bad shit in the game at the cost of the real Verso's painted world.

That's kinda reductive to their characters and the story to base it only on gender rather than reason.
Bad coping mechanisms are bad no matter the gender. Even without the physically side-effects we are shown in the outside world, she is neglecting her children in favor of escapism.

Of course she's in the wrong on that front. Because she isn't allowed to process the lost of her brother. She's forced to carry the burdens of the family as the older child because both of her parents are lost. And because of that she is dealing with it in an an unhealthy way.

But she's not an extension, she's an older sibling forced to carry the burden alone because both of her parents are fighting over losing a child and ones inability to move on for the rest of their family. She's a child who wants her mother back, that isn't unreasonable.

I never saw it the gendered way given the whole grief thing isn't gender-based. I mean, the entire plot is center around a parent who was so devastated by lose of a child they dove into something that is causing them physically harm.
So much so they neglect the rest of the family.
